Jeremiah 37 Introduction
Zedekiah succeeds Coniah, the son of Jehoiakim, in the Jewish throne, and does that which is evil in the sight of the Lord, Jeremiah 37:1, Jeremiah 37:2. The king sends a message to Jeremiah, Jeremiah 37:3-5. God suggests an answer; and foretells the return of the Chaldean army, who should most assuredly take and burn the city, Jeremiah 37:6-10. Jeremiah, in attempting to leave this devoted city, and retire to his possession in the country, is seized as a deserter, and cast into a dungeon, Jeremiah 37:11-15. The king, after a conference with him, abates the rigour of his confinement, Jeremiah 37:16-21.
INTRODUCTION TO Jeremiah 37
This chapter makes mention of the reign of Zedekiah, and what happened in it; of his message to Jeremiah, to pray for the kingdom; of the king of Babylonian's raising the siege of Jerusalem, on hearing the king of Egypt was coming to its relief; of the assurance the prophet gave that the Chaldean army would return again, and destroy the city; of the prophet's attempt to depart the city, his imprisonment, conversation with Zedekiah, and his clemency to him. A short account is given of Zedekiah, and of the disobedience of him and his people to the word of the Lord, Jeremiah 37:1; of the message sent by him to the prophet to pray for them, Jeremiah 37:3; the time, when Jeremiah was at liberty, and the siege of Jerusalem was raised, Jeremiah 37:4; the prophet's answer to them from the Lord, assuring them the Chaldeans would return and burn the city, Jeremiah 37:6; the prophet attempting to go out of the city is stopped, and charged as a deserter to the Chaldeans; is had before the princes, and beat and imprisoned, Jeremiah 37:11; but the king sending for him out of prison, and having some private discourse with him, upon the prophet's expostulation and intercession, his confinement was mitigated, and bread allowed him, Jeremiah 37:16.
Ch. Jeremiah 37:1-21. Incidents in Jeremiah’s history connected with the siege
For a similar incident to the one described in Jeremiah 37:1-10 see introductory note to ch. 21.
The ch. may be summarized as follows. (i) Jeremiah 37:1-2. Explanatory introduction. (ii) Jeremiah 37:3-10. In the face of imminent danger from the Chaldaeans Zedekiah sends to ask for the prayers of Jeremiah, who was not yet imprisoned. The enemy, fearing that the Egyptian army were about to take them in the rear, had raised the siege. The prophet is directed to announce that Pharaoh’s army will return to Egypt without rendering aid and that the Chaldaeans will undoubtedly recommence the investiture of the city, capture it, and destroy it by fire. (iii) Jeremiah 37:11-15. Taking the opportunity of the investing army’s absence, Jeremiah is going out of the city on business, when he is arrested on the charge of desertion to the enemy. He denies it, but is disbelieved by the princes, who confine him in a dungeon in the house of Jonathan the scribe. (iv) Jeremiah 37:16-21. After many days’ detention the king sends for him secretly to consult him. The prophet tells Zedekiah that he shall be made prisoner by the king of Babylon. He moreover protests against his own imprisonment as unjust, points to the hostile prophets’ predictions as falsified by events, and begs to be released from the dungeon. Zedekiah accordingly transfers him to the guard-court, and orders that he be provided with food as long as the siege lasts.

HISTORICAL SECTIONS, THIRTY-SEVENTH THROUGH FORTY-FOURTH CHAPTERS. THE CHALDEANS RAISE THE SIEGE TO GO AND MEET PHARAOH-HOPHRA. ZEDEKIAH SENDS TO JEREMIAH TO PRAY TO GOD IN BEHALF OF THE JEWS: IN VAIN, JEREMIAH TRIES TO ESCAPE TO HIS NATIVE PLACE, BUT IS ARRESTED. ZEDEKIAH ABATES THE RIGOR OF HIS IMPRISONMENT.

It is evident that Zedekiah was well affected toward Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 37-38, dealing with events during the siege of Jerusalem, we have an account of his relations with Jeremiah and of the prophet's personal history up to the capture of the city.
And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah - Of the siege and taking of Jerusalem referred to here, and the making of Zedekiah king instead of Jeconiah, see 2 Kings 24:1 (note), etc., and the notes there.
And King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned,.... The brother of Jehoiakim, whose untimely death, and want of burial, are prophesied of in the preceding chapter. The name of Zedekiah was Mattaniah before he was king; his name was changed by the king of Babylon, who made him king, 2 Kings 24:17;
instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim: the same with Jehoiakim, or jeconiah, called Coniah by way of contempt; he reigned but three months, and so was not reckoned as a king, not being confirmed by the king of Babylon, but was carried captive by him, and his uncle placed in his stead:
whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah; to whom he became tributary, and swore homage and fealty, 2 Chronicles 36:13.
This chapter brings us very near the destruction of Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, for the story of it lies in the latter end of Zedekiah's reign; we have in it, I. A general idea of the bad character of that reign, Jer 37:1,2. II. The message which Zedekiah, notwithstanding, sent to Jeremiah to desire his prayers, Jer 37:3. III. The flattering hopes which the people had conceived, that the Chaldeans would quit the siege of Jerusalem, Jer 37:5. IV. The assurance God gave them by Jeremiah (who was now at liberty, Jer 37:4) that the Chaldean army should renew the siege and take the city, Jer 37:6-10. V. The imprisonment of Jeremiah, under pretence that he was a deserter, Jer 37:11-15. VI. The kindness which Zedekiah showed him when he was a prisoner, Jer 37:16-21.
