Compare the history in Kings (the marginal reference). Both accounts were probably drawn from a common source. The writer of Kings treated the points of civil and historic importance, the later author of Chronicles collected the notices of the part taken in the transactions by the sacred order to which he probably belonged.

2 Chronicles 23 Introduction
Jehoiada the priest, after having taken counsel with the captains, Levites, etc., proclaims Joash, and anoints him king, 2 Chronicles 23:1-11. Athaliah, endeavoring to prevent it, is slain, 2 Chronicles 23:12-15. He makes the people enter into a covenant, that they would serve the Lord, 2 Chronicles 23:16. The people break down the temple of Baal, and slay Mattan his priest, 2 Chronicles 23:17. Jehoiada makes several alterations, and remodels the kingdom, 2 Chronicles 23:18-21.

1. in the seventh year Jehoiada . . . took the captains of hundreds, &c.--(See on

The five officers mentioned here had been probably of the royal guard, and were known to be strongly disaffected to the government of Athaliah.
The five names do not occur in Kings; only, and incidentally, the five divisions of the royal guard (2 Kings 11:5 note).

Jehoiada maketh Joash king, 2 Chronicles 23:1-11. Athaliah is slain, 2 Chronicles 23:12-15. The pure worship of God is restored, 2 Chronicles 23:16-21.
Took the captains of hundreds; not all, but those here following, in whom he put most trust. But this chapter is almost all taken out of 2 Kings 11, where it is explained.
Six years bloody Athaliah had tyrannised; in this chapter we have her deposed and slain, and Joash, the rightful heir, enthroned. We had the story before nearly as it is here related, 2Ki 11:4-21, etc. I. Jehoiada prepared the people for the king, acquainted them with his design, armed them, and appointed them their posts, 2Ch 23:1-10. II. He produced the king to the people, crowned him, and anointed him, 2Ch 23:11. III. He slew the usurper, 2Ch 23:12-15. IV. He reformed the kingdom, re-established religion, and restored the civil government, 2Ch 23:16-21.
