잠언 12:1-28. 1절. '지식을 사랑한다'는 훈계나 훈련의 열매로서 지식을 사랑한다는 뜻이다(잠언 1:2). '책망을 미워한다'는 잠언 10:17과 비교하라. '짐승 같다'는 어리석고 자기 복지에도 무관심하다는 뜻이다(시편 49:10; 73:22).

4절. '덕 있는 여인'은 모든 도덕적 의무에 대해 바른 성향을 가진다는 넓은 의미이다(잠언 31:10). '부끄럽게 한다'는 행실의 잘못으로 그렇게 한다는 뜻이다. '썩음'은 고칠 수 없는 악이다.

12절. '악인은 ... 악한 것을 탐한다'는 말은 그들이 속임의 교묘한 술책들을 사랑한다는 뜻이다. '뿌리 ... 열매'는 의인 자신의 자원이 그들에게 공급한다는 뜻일 수 있다. 또는 '그분, 곧 하나님이 의인의 뿌리를 주시거나 세우신다'(에스겔 17:22)로 번역할 수도 있으며, 그래서 그 뿌리는 견고하다. 혹은 동사를 비인칭으로 보아 '뿌리에 관하여 말하자면 ... 그것은 견고하다'(잠언 17:19)로 볼 수도 있다.
