Of incestuous mixtures, Leviticus 20:11, Leviticus 20:12. Bestiality, Leviticus 20:13-16. Different cases of incest and uncleanness, Leviticus 20:17-21. Exhortations and promises, Leviticus 20:22-24. The difference between clean and unclean animals to be carefully observed, Leviticus 20:25. The Israelites are separated from other nations, that they may be holy, Leviticus 20:26. A repetition of the law against wizards and them that have familiar spirits, Leviticus 20:27.
INTRODUCTION TO Leviticus 20
In this chapter several laws are, repeated, enforced with a penalty annexed to them, and the breach them made capital, to deter from it, as giving seed to Molech, Leviticus 20:1; going after such that have familiar spirits, or are wizards, Leviticus 20:6; by shunning which, and other sins, a regard would be shown to holiness, Leviticus 20:7; such as cursing parents, Leviticus 20:9; committing adultery, Leviticus 20:10; incestuous copulations, and marriages, and beastly actions, Leviticus 20:11; all which it became the Israelites to avoid, lest, when come into the land of Canaan, they should be cast out of it, as the old inhabitants were for the same things, Leviticus 20:22; and therefore, that they might appear to be a distinct people from others, they were to put a difference between clean and unclean creatures, Leviticus 20:25; and the chapter is closed with a law, making it death for any person to have a familiar spirit, or to be a wizard, Leviticus 19:27.
Ch. Leviticus 20:1-27. Various Laws with the Addition of Penalties for their Violation
For the relation between this ch. and those parts of ch. 18 which are kindred to it, see introd. note to the latter. The character stamped upon chs. 17–26 as the ‘Law of Holiness’ is conspicuous in the hortatory framework introduced by the compiler (Rh[66]), and resembling that of ch. 18.
[66] A Reviser who combined laws taken mainly from existing codes with a hortatory and warning element.
The ch. may be sub-divided thus: (1) Leviticus 20:1-7, laws bearing on religion; Molech worship and consultation with the unseen world; (2) Leviticus 20:8-21, laws bearing on immorality; unlawful marriages and unchastity; (3) Leviticus 20:22-26, hortatory conclusion; (4) Leviticus 20:27, punishment for offences mentioned in Leviticus 20:6.
Leviticus Kabanata 20 1
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
Le 20:1-27.
GIVING ONE'S SEED TO MOLECH.
The crimes which are condemned in Leviticus 18; 19 on purely spiritual ground, have here special punishments allotted to them as offences against the well-being of the nation.
And the Lord spake unto Moses,.... After he had delivered the above laws to him in the preceding chapter, he added penalties, to many of them, or declared what punishment should be inflicted on the transgressors of them:
saying; as follows.
Israelites must not offer their children to Molech on pain of death, Leviticus 20:1-3; which if not inflicted by the magistrate, shall be by God himself, Leviticus 20:4,5. The same against running after soothsayers, Leviticus 20:6; against cursers of parents, Leviticus 20:9; against adulterer, Leviticus 20:10, or incestuous and unlawful copulation with women, men, or beasts, Leviticus 20:11-21. They must put a differencebetween clean and unclean, Leviticus 20:22-26. Soothsayers to be stoned, Leviticus 20:27.
No text from Poole on this verse.
The laws which before were made are in this chapter repeated and penalties annexed to them, that those who would not be deterred from sin by the fear of God might be deterred from it by the fear of punishment. If we will not avoid such and such practices because the law has made them sin (and it is most acceptable when we go on that principle of religion), surely we shall avoid them when the law has made them death, from a principle of self-preservation. In this chapter we have, I. Many particular crimes that are made capital. I. Giving their children to Moloch, Le 20:1-5. 2. Consulting witches, Le 20:6,27. 3. Cursing parents, Le 20:9. 4. Adultery, Le 20:10. 5. Incest, Le 20:11,12,14,17,19-21. 6. Unnatural lusts, Le 20:13,15,16,18. II. General commands given to be holy, Le 20:7,8,22-26.
