The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

¹The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

²Abraham begot Isaac. And Isaac begot Jacob. And Jacob begot Judas and his brethren.

³And Judas begot Phares and Zara of Thamar. And Phares begot Esron. And Esron begot Aram.

⁴And Aram begot Aminadab. And Aminadab begot Naasson. And Naasson begot Salmon.

⁵And Salmon begot Booz of Rahab. And Booz begot Obed of Ruth. And Obed begot Jesse.

⁶And Jesse begot David the king. And David the king begot Solomon, of her that had been the wife of Urias.

⁷And Solomon begot Roboam. And Roboam begot Abia. And Abia begot Asa.

⁸And Asa begot Josaphat. And Josaphat begot Joram. And Joram begot Ozias.

⁹And Ozias begot Joatham. And Joatham begot Achaz. And Achaz begot Ezechias.

¹⁰And Ezechias begot Manasses. And Manesses begot Amon. And Amon begot Josias.

¹¹And Josias begot Jechonias and his brethren in the transmigration of Babylon.

¹²And after the transmigration of Babylon, Jechonias begot Salathiel. And Salathiel begot Zorobabel.

¹³And Zorobabel begot Abiud. And Abiud begot Eliacim. And Eliacim begot Azor.

¹⁴And Azor begot Sadoc. And Sadoc begot Achim. And Achim begot Eliud.

¹⁵And Eliud begot Eleazar. And Eleazar begot Mathan. And Mathan begot Jacob.

¹⁶And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

¹⁷So all the generations, from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David to the transmigration of Babylon, are fourteen generations: and from the transmigration of Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus

¹⁸Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.

¹⁹Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.

²⁰But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.

²¹And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.

²²Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying:

²³Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

²⁴And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.

²⁵And he knew her not till she brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The Proclamation of Cyrus

¹In the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremias might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of the Persians: and he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and in writing also, saying:

²Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians: The Lord the God of heaven hath given to me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea.

³Who is there among you of all his people? His God be with him. Let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judea, and build the house of the Lord the God of Israel: he is the God that is in Jerusalem.

⁴And let all the rest in all places wheresoever they dwell, help him every man from his place. with silver and gold, and goods, and cattle, besides that which they offer freely to the temple of God, which is in Jerusalem.

The Temple Vessels Restored and the Return Prepared

⁵Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Juda and Benjamin, and the priests, and Levites, and every one whose spirit God had raised up, to go up to build the temple of the Lord, which was in Jerusalem.

⁶And all they that were round about, helped their hands with vessels of silver, and gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with furniture, besides what they had offered on their own accord.

⁷And king Cyrus brought forth the vessels of the temple of the Lord, which Nabuchodonosor had taken from Jerusalem, and had put them in the temple of his god.

⁸Now Cyrus king of Persia brought them forth by the hand of Mithridates the son of Gazabar, and numbered them to Sassabasar the prince of Juda.

⁹And this is the number of them: thirty bowls of gold, a thousand bowls of silver, nine and twenty knives, thirty cups of gold,

¹⁰Silver cups of a second sort, four hundred and ten: other vessels a thousand.

¹¹All the vessels of gold and silver, five thousand four hundred: all these Sassabasar brought with them that came up from the captivity of Babylon to Jerusalem.

Preface to Theophilus

¹The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began to do and to teach,

²Until the day on which, giving commandments by the Holy Ghost to the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up.

³To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion, by many proofs, for forty days appearing to them, and speaking of the kingdom of God.

⁴And eating together with them, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth.

⁵For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.

The Ascension of Jesus and the Promise of His Return

⁶They therefore who were come together, asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

⁷But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments, which the Father hath put in his own power:

⁸But you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the uttermost part of the earth.

⁹And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight.

¹⁰And while they were beholding him going up to heaven, behold two men stood by them in white garments.

¹¹Who also said: Ye men of Galilee, why stand you looking up to heaven? This Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come, as you have seen him going into heaven.

The Disciples Devoted to Prayer in the Upper Room

¹²Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount that is called Olivet, which is nigh Jerusalem, within a sabbath day’s journey.

¹³And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Jude the brother of James.

¹⁴All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

¹⁵In those days Peter rising up in the midst of the brethren, said: (now the number of persons together was about an hundred and twenty:)

¹⁶Men, brethren, the scripture must needs be fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was the leader of them that apprehended Jesus:

¹⁷Who was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

¹⁸And he indeed hath possessed a field of the reward of iniquity, and being hanged, burst asunder in the midst: and all his bowels gushed out.

¹⁹And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: so that the same field was called in their tongue, Haceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

²⁰For it is written in the book of Psalms: Let their habitation become desolate, and let there be none to dwell therein. And his bishopric let another take.

²¹Wherefore of these men who have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,

²²Beginning from the baptism of John, until the day wherein he was taken up from us, one of these must be made a witness with us of his resurrection.

²³And they appointed two, Joseph, called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

²⁴And praying, they said: Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

²⁵To take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas hath by transgression fallen, that he might go to his own place.

²⁶And they gave them lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
