The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

¹The booke of the generation of Jesus Christ the sonne of Dauid, the sonne of Abraham.

²Abraham begate Isaac. And Isaac begate Iacob. And Iacob begat Iudas and his brethren.

³And Iudas begate Phares, and Zara of Thamar. And Phares begate Esrom. And Esrom begate Aram.

⁴And Aram begate Aminadab. And Aminadab begate Naasson. And Naasson begat Salmon.

⁵And Salmon begate Booz of Rachab. And Booz begat Obed of Ruth. and Obed begat Iesse.

⁶And Iesse begate Dauid the King. And Dauid the King begate Salomon of her that was the wife of Vrias.

⁷And Salomon begate Roboam. And Roboam begate Abia. And Abia begate Asa.

⁸And Asa begate Iosaphat. And Iosaphat begate Ioram. And Ioram begate Hozias.

⁹And Hozias begat Ioatham. And Ioatham begate Achaz. And Achaz begate Ezekias.

¹⁰And Ezekias begate Manasses. And Manasses begate Amon. And Amon begate Iosias.

¹¹And Iosias begate Iakim. And Iakim begate Iechonias and his brethren about the time they were caried away to Babylon.

¹²And after they were caried away into Babylon, Iechonias begate Salathiel. And Salathiel begate Zorobabel.

¹³And Zorobabel begate Abiud. And Abiud begate Eliacim. And Eliacim begate Azor.

¹⁴And Azor begate Sadoc. And Sadoc begate Achim. And Achim begate Eliud.

¹⁵And Eliud begate Eleazar. And Eleazar begate Matthan. And Matthan begate Iacob.

¹⁶And Iacob begat Ioseph ye husband of Mary, of whom was borne Jesus, that is called Christ.

¹⁷So all the generations from Abraham to Dauid, are fourtene generations. And from Dauid vntil they were caried away into Babylon, fourtene generations: and after they were caried away into Babylon vntill Christ, fourteene generations.

The Birth of Jesus

¹⁸Nowe the birth of Jesus Christ was thus, When as his mother Mary was betrothed to Ioseph, before they came together, shee was found with childe of the holy Ghost.

¹⁹Then Ioseph her husband being a iust man, and not willing to make her a publike example, was minded to put her away secretly.

²⁰But whiles he thought these things, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeared vnto him in a dreame, saying, Ioseph, the sonne of Dauid, feare not to take Mary thy wife: for that which is conceiued in her, is of the holy Ghost.

²¹And she shall bring foorth a sonne, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for hee shall saue his people from their sinnes.

²²And al this was done that it might be fulfilled, which is spoken of the Lord by ye Prophet, saying,

²³Behold, a virgine shalbe with childe, and shall beare a sonne, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is by interpretation, God with vs.

²⁴Then Ioseph, being raised from sleepe, did as the Angel of the Lord had inioyned him, and tooke his wife.

²⁵But he knew her not, til she had broght forth her first borne sonne, and he called his name JESUS.

The Proclamation of Cyrus

¹Nowe in the first yere of Cyrus King of Persia (that the worde of the Lord, spoken by the mouth of Ieremiah, might be accomplished) the Lord stirred vp the spirite of Cyrus King of Persia, and hee made a Proclamation thorowe all his Kingdome, and also by writing, saying,

²Thus saith Cyrus King of Persia, The Lord God of heauen hath giuen me all the kingdomes of the earth, and he hath commanded me to builde him an house in Ierusalem, which is in Iudah.

³Who is he among you of all his people with whome his God is? let him goe vp to Ierusalem which is in Iudah, and buylde the house of the Lord God of Israel: he is the God, which is in Ierusalem.

⁴And euery one that remayneth in any place (where he soiourneth) let the men of his place relieue him with siluer and with golde, and with substance, and with cattel, and with a willing offring, for the house of God that is in Ierusalem.

The Temple Vessels Restored and the Return Prepared

⁵Then the chiefe fathers of Iudah and Beniamin, and the Priests and Leuites rose vp, with al them whose spirit God had raysed to goe vp, to builde the house of the Lord which is in Ierusalem.

⁶And all they that were about them, strengthened their handes with vessels of siluer, with golde, with substance and with cattell, and with precious thinges, besides all that was willingly offred.

⁷Also the King Cyrus brought forth the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of Ierusalem, and had put them in the house of his god.

⁸Euen them did Cyrus King of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them vnto Sheshbazzar the Prince of Iudah.

⁹And this is the nomber of them, thirtie basins of golde, a thousand basins of siluer, nine and twentie kniues,

¹⁰Thirtie boules of gold, and of siluer boules of the second sort, foure hundreth and tenne, and of other vessels, a thousand.

¹¹All the vessels of golde and siluer were fiue thousand and foure hundreth. Sheshbazzar brought vp all with them of the captiuitie that came vp from Babel to Ierusalem.

Preface to Theophilus

¹I have made the former treatise, O Theophilus, of al that Jesus began to doe and teach,

²Vntill the day that hee was taken vp, after that hee through the holy Ghost, had giuen commandements vnto the Apostles, whome hee had chosen:

³To whome also he presented himselfe aliue after that he had suffered, by many infallible tokens, being seene of them by the space of fourtie daies, and speaking of those thinges which appertaine to the kingdome of God.

⁴And when he had gathered them together, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Hierusalem, but to waite for the promise of the Father, which sayde hee, yee haue heard of me.

⁵For Iohn in deede baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost within these fewe daies.

The Ascension of Jesus and the Promise of His Return

⁶When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the kingdome to Israel?

⁷And hee saide vnto them, It is not for you to know the times, or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his owne power,

⁸But yee shall receiue power of the holy Ghost, when he shall come on you: and ye shalbe witnesses vnto me both in Hierusalem and in all Iudea, and in Samaria, and vnto the vttermost part of the earth.

⁹And when he had spoken these things, while they behelde, he was taken vp: for a cloude tooke him vp out of their sight.

¹⁰And while they looked stedfastly towarde heauen, as hee went, beholde, two men stoode by them in white apparell,

¹¹Which also sayde, Yee men of Galile, why stande yee gasing into heauen? This Iesus which is taken vp from you into heauen, shall so come, as yee haue seene him goe into heauen.

The Disciples Devoted to Prayer in the Upper Room

¹²Then returned they vnto Hierusalem from the mount that is called the mount of Oliues, which is neere to Hierusalem, being from it a Sabbath daies iourney.

¹³And when they were come in, they went vp into an vpper chamber, where abode both Peter and Iames, and Iohn, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartlemew, and Matthewe, Iames the sonne of Alpheus, and Simon Zelotes, and Iudas Iames brother.

¹⁴These all continued with one accorde in prayer and supplication with the women, and Marie the mother of Iesus, and with his brethren.

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

¹⁵And in those dayes Peter stoode vp in the middes of the disciples, and sayde (nowe the nomber of names that were in one place were about an hundreth and twentie.)

¹⁶Yee men and brethren, this scripture must needes haue beene fulfilled, which the holy Ghost by the mouth of Dauid spake before of Iudas, which was guide to them that tooke Iesus.

¹⁷For hee was nombred with vs, and had obteined fellowship in this ministration.

¹⁸He therefore hath purchased a field with the reward of iniquitie: and when he had throwen downe himselfe headlong, hee brast asunder in the middes, and all his bowels gushed out.

¹⁹And it is knowen vnto all the inhabitants of Hierusalem, in so much, that that field is called in their owne language, Aceldama, That is, the field of blood.

²⁰For it is written in the booke of Psalmes, Let his habitation be void, and let no man dwel therein: also, Let another take his charge.

²¹Wherefore of these men which haue companied with vs, all the time that the Lord Iesus was conuersant among vs,

²²Beginning from the baptisme of Iohn vnto the day that hee was taken vp from vs, must one of them bee made a witnesse with vs of his resurrection.

²³And they presented two, Ioseph called Barsabas, whose surname was Iustus, and Matthias.

²⁴And they praied, saying, Thou Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shewe whether of these two thou hast chosen,

²⁵That he may take the roume of this ministration and Apostleship, from which Iudas hath gone astray, to goe to his owne place.

²⁶Then they gaue foorth their lottes: and the lotte fell on Matthias, and hee was by a common consent counted with the eleuen Apostles.
