Ezekiel 28 Introduction
The first part of this chapter relates to a King of Tyre, probably the same who is called in the Phoenician annals Ithobalus. He seems to have been a vain man, who affected Divine honors. The prophet treats his foolish pretensions with severe irony, and predicts his doom, Ezekiel 28:1-10. He then takes up a funeral dirge and lamentation over him, in which his former pomp and splendor are finely contrasted with his fall, in terms that seem frequently to allude to the fall of Lucifer from heaven, (Isaiah 14), Ezekiel 28:11-19. The overthrow of Sidon, the mother city of Tyre, is next announced, Ezekiel 28:20-23; and the chapter concludes with a promise to the Jews of deliverance from all their enemies, and particularly of their restoration from the Babylonish captivity, Ezekiel 28:24-26.
INTRODUCTION TO Ezekiel 28
This chapter contains a prophecy of the destruction of the prince of Tyre; a lamentation for the king of Tyre; a denunciation of judgments on Zidon, and a promise of peace and safety to Israel. The order given the prophet to prophesy of the ruin of the prince of Tyre, Ezekiel 28:1, the cause of his ruin, his pride on account of his wisdom and riches, which rose to such a pitch, as to make himself God, Ezekiel 28:2, the manner in which his destruction shall be accomplished, Ezekiel 28:7, the lamentation for the king of Tyre begins Ezekiel 28:11, setting forth his former grandeur and dignity, Ezekiel 28:13, his fall, and the cause of it, injustice and violence in merchandise, pride because of beauty and wisdom, and profanation of sanctuaries, Ezekiel 28:16, next follow the judgments on Zidon, Ezekiel 28:20, and the chapter is concluded with a promise of the restoration of the Jews to their own land, and of great tranquillity and safety in it, Ezekiel 28:24.

This chapter consists of two prophecies: the first and larger one against the prince of Tyre (Ezekiel 28:1-19); the second, a very brief one, against Zidon (Ezekiel 28:20-26). The first prophecy consists of two parts, corresponding to Ezekiel 26, 27; in the former of these the pride of the prince is described, and he is warned of his approaching death (Ezekiel 28:1-10), and then follows a lamentation (Ezekiel 28:11-19). It has been thought surprising that so commercial a nation should have been governed by a monarch; but not only is this a fact of Phœnician history, but the name of the prince who sat on the throne at this time, Ithobal II., has been preserved.
The whole prophecy is full of most varied and striking imagery, and there is no other passage in Scripture where there is such detailed and peculiar irony. It brings out most powerfully “the impiety of all ambition, and the vanity of all greatness, which seeks its foundation and support elsewhere than in the power and goodness of the Eternal.”
Ch. 28 The fall of the prince of Tyre
The chapter has three parts:
(1) Ezekiel 28:1-10. The sinful pride of the prince of Tyre and his destruction.
(2) Ezekiel 28:11-19. Lament over his fall and expulsion from the garden of God.
(3) Ezekiel 28:20-26. To this is added a prophecy against Sidon.

PROPHETICAL DIRGE ON THE KING OF TYRE, AS THE CULMINATION AND EMBODIMENT OF THE SPIRIT OF CARNAL PRIDE AND SELF-SUFFICIENCY OF THE WHOLE STATE. THE FALL OF ZIDON, THE MOTHER CITY. THE RESTORATION OF ISRAEL IN CONTRAST WITH TYRE AND ZIDON.
The prophecy against the prince of Tyre. Throughout the east the majesty and glory of a people were collected in the person of their monarch, who in some nations was worshipped as a god. The prince is here the embodiment of the community. Their glory is his glory, their pride his pride. The doom of Tyre could not be complete without denunciation of the prince of Tyre. Idolatrous nations and idolatrous kings were, in the eyes of the prophet, antagonists to the true God. In them was embodied the principle of evil opposing itself to the divine government of the world. Hence, some of the fathers saw upon the throne, not simply a hostile monarch, but "the Prince of this world, spiritual wickedness (or wicked spirits) in high places." Whenever evil in any way domineers over good, there is a "prince of Tyrus," against whom God utters His voice. The "mystery of iniquity is ever working, and in that working we recognize the power of Satan whom God condemns and will destroy.
The word of the Lord came again unto me,.... With another prophecy; as before against the city of Tyre, now against the king of Tyre:

In this chapter we have, I. A prediction of the fall and ruin of the king of Tyre, who, in the destruction of that city, is particularly set up as a mark for God's arrows, Eze 28:1-10. II. A lamentation for the king of Tyre, when he has thus fallen, though he falls by his own iniquity, Eze 28:11-19. III. A prophecy of the destruction of Zidon, which as in the neighbourhood of Tyre and had a dependence upon it, Eze 28:20-23. IV. A promise of the restoration of the Israel of God, though in the day of their calamity they were insulted over by their neighbours, Eze 28:24-26.
