Ezekiel 30 Introduction
This chapter describes, with great force and elegance, the ruin of Egypt and all her allies by the Chaldeans under Nebuchadnezzar, Ezekiel 30:1-11; with an amplification of the distress of the principal cities of Egypt on that occasion, Ezekiel 30:12-19. The remaining verses are a short prophecy relating to the same event, and therefore annexed to the longer one preceding, although this was predicted sooner, Ezekiel 30:20-26.
INTRODUCTION TO Ezekiel 30
This chapter is a continuation of the prophecy against Egypt, both against the country and the king of it. It is introduced with expressions of lamentation, because of the destruction coming on, Ezekiel 30:1, and not only Egypt, and the cities thereof, should be destroyed, but all her friends, associates, and allies; the Ethiopians, Lydians, Lybians, and others, Ezekiel 30:4. Nebuchadnezzar and his army were to be the instruments of her ruin, Ezekiel 30:10, particular cities are mentioned by name, which should suffer much, and become desolate, Ezekiel 30:13 and then Pharaoh king of Egypt himself is threatened with broken arms, and his people to be scattered among the nations, Ezekiel 30:20, and the king of Babylon is again mentioned, whose arms should be strengthened to do all this, Ezekiel 30:24.

This chapter is made up of two distinct prophecies: Ezekiel 30:1-19, and Ezekiel 30:20-26. The latter is distinctly dated, and comes in regular chronological order between Ezekiel 29:1-16 and Ezekiel 31; but whether the former belongs to this series, or is connected with Ezekiel 29:17-21, has been questioned. There are no sufficient data for a positive determination of the point; but the general presumption is that an undated prophecy belongs in the interval between the dates which precede and which follow. With this presumption the mention of the nearness of the event (Ezekiel 30:3) and of the name of Nebuchadnezzar (Ezekiel 30:10) agree, though not in themselves determinative.
This prophecy is divided into four parts, not strongly distinguished, but each marked by the formula, “Thus saith the Lord” (Ezekiel 30:2; Ezekiel 30:6; Ezekiel 30:10; Ezekiel 30:13).
Ch. 30. Further prophecies against Egypt
Ch. 30 consists of two prophecies, the first of which, Ezekiel 30:1-19, in all probability belongs to the same date as Ezekiel 29:1-16, that is, about seven months before the fall of Jerusalem; and the second, Ezekiel 30:20-26, is dated four months before the capture of the city. The second prophecy seems to have been suggested by some actual reverse inflicted on Pharaoh, called “breaking his arm” (Ezekiel 30:21-22), and further disaster is threatened against him.
Unlike the petty nations lying around Israel Egypt is a world power. Its influence is felt over all nations, and its history and destinies interest and affect the world. When Jehovah interposes to deal with it mankind and nature feel his presence. His interposition is the day of the Lord, a day of darkness and terror over all. When Egypt is judged creation wraps herself in a pall.—Like the other prophecies in Ezekiel the chapter is filled up with details within its general frame. The main ideas, however, are these: 1. Egypt with her many allied nations, whose troops compose her vast and many-coloured army, shall be overthrown. 2. Her great cities, the centres of her life and restless activity, shall be cast to the ground, and her teeming population scattered among all the nations. 3. Her idols and all her idolatries shall cease, and her native princes (closely connected with her priesthood and worship) shall be cut off. And Jehovah shall be known.

CONTINUATION OF THE PROPHECIES AGAINST EGYPT.
Two distinct messages: (1) At
Eze 30:1-19,
a repetition of
Eze 29:1-16,
with fuller details of lifelike distinctness. The date is probably not long after that mentioned in
Eze 29:17,
on the eve of Nebuchadnezzar's march against Egypt after subjugating Tyre. (2) A vision relating directly to Pharaoh and the overthrow of his kingdom; communicated at an earlier date, the seventh of the first month of the eleventh year. Not a year after the date in
Eze 29:1,
and three months before the taking of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar.
Third prophecy Ezekiel 30:1-19 against Egypt, probably to be connected with the previous verses (compare Ezekiel 30:10 with the Ezekiel 29:17-21 note). Some consider it to belong to the earlier part of Ezekiel 29 (compare Ezekiel 29:10, Ezekiel 29:12 with Ezekiel 30:5-6).
The word of the Lord came again unto me,.... Whether this prophecy was delivered about the time of that in the former part of the preceding chapter, namely, in the tenth year, tenth month, and twelfth day of it; or whether about the time that was which is recorded in the latter part of the chapter, in the seven and twentieth year of Jehoiachin's captivity, is not easy to say; I am inclined to think it was about the time of the latter, since the time of the fulfilment of it is said to be near, Ezekiel 30:3,
saying: as follows:
In this chapter we have, I. A continuation of the prophecy against Egypt, which we had in the latter part of the foregoing chapter, just before the desolation of that once flourishing kingdom was completed by Nebuchadnezzar, in which is foretold the destruction of all her allies and confederates, all her interests and concerns, and the several steps which the king of Babylon should take in pushing on this destruction, Eze 30:1-19. II. A repetition of a former prophecy against Egypt, just before the desolation of it begun by their own bad conduct, which gradually weakened them and prepared the way for the king of Babylon, Eze 30:20-26. It is all much to the same purport with what we had before.
