Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary

Tradotto Apri passaggio

In this chapter we have, I. A threatening of the destruction of Israel for their idolatry, and the destruction of their idols with them, Eze 6:1-7. II. A promise of the gracious return of a remnant of them to God, by true repentance and reformation, Eze 6:8-10. III. Directions given to the prophet and others, the Lord's servants, to lament both the iniquities and the calamities of Israel, Eze 6:11-14.

Ezekiel 6 Introduction

Tradotto Apri passaggio

In this chapter, which forms a distinct section, the prophet denounces the judgments of God against the Jews for their idolatry, Ezekiel 6:1-7; but tells them that a remnant shall be saved, and brought to a sense of their sins by their severe afflictions, Ezekiel 6:8-14.

INTRODUCTION TO Ezekiel 6

This chapter contains a prophecy of the desolation of the whole land of Israel, and a promise that a remnant should escape, with a lamentation for the sad destruction, signified by some gestures of the prophet. The order to the prophet to deliver out the prophecy is in Ezekiel 6:1; the several parts of the land of Israel or Judea, to which the prophecy is directed, are signified by mountains, hills, rivers, and valleys, on which the sword should be brought, Ezekiel 6:3; the desolation is described, and the cause of it suggested, the idolatry of the people, Ezekiel 6:4; the promise of a remnant that should escape, who should remember the Lord, loath themselves for their sins, acknowledge him, and that his word was not in vain, is in Ezekiel 6:8; the lamentation, signified by the prophet's smiting with his hand, and stamping with his foot, for the sins of the people, and the judgments that should come upon them, is in Ezekiel 6:11; a particular enumeration of these judgments follows, and of the places where they should be executed, Ezekiel 6:12; the end of them was to bring them to the knowledge and acknowledgment of the Lord, against whom they had sinned and offended by their idolatry, as the places where their slain fell would show, Ezekiel 6:13; and the chapter is concluded with a resolution to bring this desolation on them, Ezekiel 6:14.

Ezekiel 6 Introduction

Tradotto Apri passaggio

VI.

The two prophecies contained in Ezekiel 6, 7 are distinct, although both closely connected with the explanation of the symbolism in Ezekiel 5. They were probably uttered at sufficient intervals of time from Ezekiel 5 and from each other to allow of a distinct impression being made by each of them; yet the interval could not have been long, since Ezekiel 8 is dated in the sixth month of the sixth year. There must therefore have been such a following up of one blow after another of prophetic denunciation as was calculated to produce the most profound effect. In the present chapter judgment is denounced upon the idolatrous places and people, although a remnant are to be saved who shall recognise the hand of the Lord, and then the terribleness of the judgment of desolation is enlarged upon. In Ezekiel 7 the quickness and inevitableness of this judgment is the chief thought. In both the judgment is no longer denounced merely against Jerusalem, as representing the people, but is expressly extended to the whole land.

Ezekiel 6 Introduction

Tradotto Apri passaggio

Ch. 6. Prophecy against the mountains of Israel, the seats of her idolatry

Ch. 4, 5. were directed chiefly against Jerusalem, because she had rebelled against the statutes of the Lord (ch. Ezekiel 5:6) and because she had polluted his sanctuary with her abominations (ch. Ezekiel 5:11). Therefore the arrows of Jehovah’s judgments shall come upon her, famine, pestilence and sword. For the same reason his judgments must overtake the land, especially the mountains, on which the high places were situated, where the idolatries and false worship were practised.

(1) Ezekiel 6:1-7. The high places, altars and sun-images shall be utterly destroyed; the carcases of the worshippers shall fall before the idols, and their bones be scattered about them.

(2) Ezekiel 6:8-10. A remnant shall escape and shall remember the Lord among the nations whither they are scattered, and shall loathe themselves for all the evils which they have done; and they shall know that he who spake to them was Jehovah, God alone.

(3) Ezekiel 6:11-14. Renewal of the threat of destruction with every expression of scorn and hatred on the prophet’s part for the people’s doings. They shall know when their slain fall down and lie around their altars that Jehovah has done it.

Ezekiel 6:1

Tradotto Apri passaggio

The former prophecies concerned the city of Jerusalem and the inhabitants of Judaea. The present is addressed to the whole land and people of Israel, which is to be included in a like judgment, The ground of the judgment is "idolatry," and the whole rests on Deuteronomy 12. The prophecy is against the "mountains" of Israel, because the mountains and valleys were the seats of idol-worship. It is also the proclamation of the final judgment of Israel. It is the picture of the future judgment of the world.

Ezekiel 6:1

And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying. That is, the word of prophecy from the Lord, as the Targum: this, according to Junius, was delivered out by the prophet on a sabbath day, the twenty first of the fifth month, and in the sixth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity; and so was more than a year after the vision at Chebar, Ezekiel 1:1.
