Numbers 8 Introduction
Directions how the lamps are to be lighted, Numbers 8:1-3. How the candlestick was formed, Numbers 8:4. The Levites to be consecrated to their service by being cleansed, sprinkled, shaved, purified, and their clothes washed, Numbers 8:5-7. To offer a meat-offering and a sin-offering, Numbers 8:8. The people to put their hands upon them, Numbers 8:9, Numbers 8:10. Aaron is to offer them before the Lord, Numbers 8:11. The Levites to lay their hands on the heads of the bullocks, etc., Numbers 8:12. The Levites are taken to assist Aaron and his sons in the place of all the first-born of Israel, Numbers 8:13-19. Moses and Aaron do as they were commanded, the Levites are presented, purified, and commence their service, Numbers 8:20-22. They are to begin their service at twenty-five years of age, and leave off at fifty, Numbers 8:23-25. After this they shall have the general inspection of the service, Numbers 8:26.

In this chapter orders are given for the lighting the seven lamps of the candlestick, Numbers 8:1; and for the consecration of the Levites to their office, by a purification of them, Numbers 8:5; by a separation of them from the children of Israel, and the imposition of their hands on them, and of the hands of the Levites on the offerings offered for them, Numbers 8:9; and being thus given to the Lord, and claimed as his, instead of the firstborn of Israel, they are given to Aaron and his sons to do service in the tabernacle, Numbers 8:16; and their age at which they were to enter into service and cease from it is fixed, Numbers 8:23.

HOW THE LAMPS ARE TO BE LIGHTED.
1. the Lord spake unto Moses--The order of this chapter suggests the idea that the following instructions were given to Moses while he was within the tabernacle of the congregation, after the princes had completed their offering. But from the tenor of the instructions, it is more likely that they were given immediately after the Levites had been given to the priests (see on
Nu 3:1-4:49),
and that the record of these instructions had been postponed till the narrative of other transactions in the camp had been made [PATRICK].
The actual lighting of the lamps (compare the marginal references) was to be done to set forth symbolically the special presence which God had now Numbers 7:89 actually established among His people.
And the Lord spake unto Moses,.... Whether immediately after the offerings of the princes, or at another time, is not certain; Aben Ezra thinks it was in the night God spake unto him, because then the lamps were lighted and burning:
saying; as follows.
How the lamps are to be lighted, Numbers 8:1-4. God commands the Levites to be cleansed, Numbers 8:5-15; that they may serve with Aaron and his sons instead of the first-born, Numbers 8:16-22. Their age and service, Numbers 8:23-26.

Verse 1. - The Lord spake unto Moses. It does not appear when. The attempt of modern commentators to find a real connection between this section and the offering of the princes or the consecration of the Levites is simply futile. Such connection may be imagined, but the same ingenuity would obviously be equally successful if this section had been inserted in any other place from Exodus 37, to the end of this book. The more probable explanation will be given below.
This chapter is concerning the lamps or lights of the sanctuary. I. The burning lamps in the candlestick, which the priests were charged to tend, Nu 8:1-4. II. The living lamps (if I may so call them), The Levites, who as ministers were burning and shining lights. The ordination of the priests we had an account of, Le 8:1-36. Here we have an account of the ordination of the Levites, the inferior clergy. 1. How they were purified, Nu 8:5-8. 2. How they were parted with by the people, Nu 8:9-10. 3. How they were presented to God in lieu of the firstborn, Nu 8:11-18. 4. How they were consigned to Aaron and his sons, to be ministers to them, Nu 8:19. 5. How all these orders were duly executed, Nu 8:20-22. And, lastly, the age appointed for their ministration, Nu 8:23-26, etc.
