Jeremiah 36.
God commands Jeremiah to write down in one roll or volume all the predictions he had uttered against Israel and Judah, and all the surrounding nations, from the day of his vocation to the prophetic office, that the house of Judah might have abundant warning of the dreadful calamities with which their country was about to be visited, if not prevented by a timely repentance, Jeremiah 36:1-3. The prophet employs Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, to write from his mouth all the words of the Lord, and then to read them publicly upon a fast day in the Lord's house, Jeremiah 36:4-8. A general fast is proclaimed in the following year, viz., the fifth year of the reign of Jehoiakim; upon which occasion Baruch, in obedience to the prophet's command, reads the words of Jeremiah to all the people at the entry of the new gate of the temple, Jeremiah 36:9, Jeremiah 36:10. The princes, hearing of this, send for Baruch, who reads the roll to them; at the contents of which they are greatly alarmed, and solemnly resolve to give information to the king, at the same time advising both the prophet and his scribe to hide themselves, Jeremiah 36:11-19. Jehoiakim likewise having sent for the roll, Jehudi reads to him a part; and then the king, though advised to the contrary by some of has princes, having cut the leaves, throws the whole into the fire, Jeremiah 36:20-25, and orders Jeremiah and Baruch to be seized; but they could not be found, because a special providence of God had concealed them, Jeremiah 36:26. Jeremiah is commanded to re-write his prophecies, and to denounce the judgments of God against the king who had destroyed the first roll, Jeremiah 36:27-31. Baruch accordingly writes from the mouth of Jeremiah a new copy, with numerous additions, Jeremiah 36:32.
INTRODUCTION TO Jeremiah 36
This chapter gives an account of an impious action of King Jehoiakim's burning the roll of Jeremiah's prophecies read unto him, and the consequence of it. The order to write this roll, the time when, the contents and use of it, are in Jeremiah 36:1; the writing of it by Baruch, the order of the prophet to read it to the people on such a day, with the view he had in so doing, Jeremiah 36:4; the reading of it by Baruch to the people first, Jeremiah 36:8; then to the princes, being sent for by them, upon a report made to them, Jeremiah 36:11; the king being acquainted with it, Jehudi was sent to fetch the roll, who read it to the king, Jeremiah 36:16; who having heard part of it, burnt it, notwithstanding the intercession of some of his princes to the contrary, Jeremiah 36:22; and who also ordered the apprehension of Jeremiah and Baruch, who could not be found, Jeremiah 36:26; upon this a new roll is ordered to be written, Jeremiah 36:27; which was done with some additions to it, respecting the destruction of the land, and the people in it, by the Chaldeans; and particularly the death of the king, and his want of burial, Jeremiah 36:29.
Ch. Jeremiah 36:1-32. Jeremiah’s Roll written, read, burnt, and re-written
This extremely interesting and important ch., in its bearing on the history of the construction of the Book as it now stands, has been already treated in the Intr. pp. xl. ff.
We may summarize the contents as follows. (i) Jeremiah 36:1-8. In the fourth year of Jehoiakim Jehovah bids Jeremiah commit to writing in a Roll the substance of his prophecies since the commencement of his ministry, in case the people may thereby be moved to forsake their evil ways. Baruch accordingly takes down the words at the mouth of Jeremiah, and, as the latter is unable himself to appear at the Temple, reads it there at his direction. (ii) Jeremiah 36:9-20. In the ninth month of the next year Baruch reads the Roll publicly in the chamber of Gemariah. Micaiah, his son, reports its substance to the princes, who cause Baruch to come and repeat the reading. They declare thereupon that they will communicate the contents to the king, ascertaining by questions that Jeremiah is the sole author, and they advise that he and his amanuensis go into hiding. (iii) Jeremiah 36:21-26. Jehoiakim sends for the Roll, and on hearing the earlier part of its contents, cuts it in pieces and burns it in the brasier before which he is sitting, in spite of the intercession of some of the princes. Moreover he bids that Jeremiah and Baruch should be seized; but they elude him. (iv) Jeremiah 36:27-32. Jehovah bids the prophet re-write the Roll, adding the punishment that shall be the lot of Jehoiakim personally for his refusal to believe in the calamities which were coming on his people. Jeremiah therefore dictates the new edition of the Roll, including further like prophecies.
Here we have the detailed circumstances under which Jeremiah recorded in a permanent form the substance of those prophecies which he had been uttering against Judah and Jerusalem for twenty-three years (see on Jeremiah 25:3). This ch. like the last (see on Jeremiah 36:1 there) forms a break in the historical section (chs. 32–44), and goes back to the time of Jehoiakim.

Jer 36:1-32.

And it came to pass in the fourth year - About the end of this year, see Jeremiah 36:9. This discourse also bears its own date, and was probably delivered at a time when the people enjoyed peace, and were about to celebrate one of their annual fasts.
