The psalmist praises the Lord, and extols his works as great, honorable, glorious, and magnificent, Psalm 111:1-4; his providence and kindness to his followers, Psalm 111:5-8; the redemption he has granted to his people, Psalm 111:9. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, Psalm 111:10.
This is one of the alphabetical or acrostic Psalms: but it is rather different from those we have already seen, as the first eight verses contain each two members; and each member commences with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. But the two last verses are composed of three members each, characterized the same way, making twenty-two members or hemistichs in the whole, to each of which a consecutive letter of the alphabet is prefixed. But this division is not proper: it should follow the arrangement in the Hebrew poetry, where every hemistich stands by itself, and each contains a complete sense. The Psalm has no title in the Hebrew, unless the word Hallelujah be considered as such; and the thanksgivings which it contains were probably composed for the benefit of the Jews after their return from captivity.
INTRODUCTION TO Psalm 111
This psalm, though without a name, is thought to be penned by David; it is composed in an artificial manner, in an alphabetical order, each clause or sentence beginning with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in course, till the whole is finished; this perhaps was done to recommend the psalm, to make it more observed, and to help the memory; the general design of it is to excite to praise the Lord, from the consideration of his great and wonderful works.
CXI.
Psalms 111, 112 should be read closely together, the one being a pendant of the other. They are both acrostics of at once the simplest and most perfect construction, each clause (not, as usual, each verse of two or more clauses) exhibiting the alphabetical arrangement. There are therefore exactly twenty-two clauses, nearly of three words each. In order to limit the number of verses to ten—considered a perfect number—the last two verses in each psalm are arranged as triplets.
The close relation of the two psalms is also exhibited in their subject. The first exhibits Jehovah in covenant with man; the second, man in covenant with Jehovah. The one sings the Divine praise in view of the kindness God has shown to Israel; in the second, the feeling of the just man—i.e., the Israelite faithful to the covenant, is the subject. In both we discover the strength of these religious convictions, which, in spite of the contradictions experienced in actual life, persist in maintaining the grand principle of Divine justice, and declaring that the cause of virtue will triumph, and success and wealth never fail the faithful.
The close relation of the two psalms is marked by the echo in the second, of phrases applied in the first to Jehovah. (Comp. e.g., Psalm 111:3, with Psalm 112:3; Psalm 112:9; Psalm 111:4, with Psalm 112:4; Psalm 112:6.)
Psalms 111, 112 are closely connected in structure, contents, and language. Each consists of twenty-two lines, which begin with the letters of the alphabet in regular order, and are arranged in eight distichs and two tristichs. Psalms 111 celebrates the power, goodness, and righteousness of Jehovah; Psalms 112 describes the prosperity, beneficence, and righteousness of those who fear Him. Words and phrases applied to God in Psalms 111 are transferred in Psalms 112 with some modification of meaning, and sometimes with startling boldness, to the godly man, describing his character as the reflection of the character of Jehovah. Thus Psalm 112:1 a takes up the thought of Psalm 111:10 a: with Psalm 112:1 b (delighteth) cp. Psalm 111:2; Psalm 112:3 b, Psalm 111:9 b = Psalm 111:3 b; Psalm 112:4 b = Psalm 111:4 b: with Psalm 112:6 b cp. Psalm 111:4 a. The trustfulness of the godly man in Psalm 112:7-8 answers to the trustworthiness of Jehovah in Psalm 111:7-8. Other correspondences of thought and language may be noticed by the student.
Both Psalms draw largely from older Psalms and from Proverbs, and doubtless belong to the period after the exile, but to what part of it there is nothing to shew. Several MSS of the LXX, and the Vulgate, prefix to Psalms 112 the title, For the Return of Haggai and Zechariah (τῆς ἐπιστροφῆς Ἁγγαίου καὶ Ζαχαρίου): and the same title seems originally to have been prefixed to Psalms 111 in the LXX, though it is now found in the Syro-hexaplar version only.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
Ps 111:1-10.
