The Jews give an account of the afflicions which they have passed through, Psalm 129:1-3. And thank God for their deliverance, Psalm 129:4. The judgments that shall fall on the workers of iniquity, Psalm 129:5-8.
This Psalm was written after the captivity; and contains a reference to the many tribulations which the Jews passed through from their youth, i.e., the earliest part of their history, their bondage in Egypt. It has no title in any of the Versions, nor in the Hebrew text, except the general one of A Psalm of Degrees. The author is uncertain.
INTRODUCTION TO Psalm 129
A Song of degrees. This psalm was written in later times, after many of the distresses of Israel; very probably upon the Jews return from the Babylonish captivity, by Ezra, or some other godly person. Aben Ezra says the psalmist speaks in the language of Israel in captivity; and the same is the sense of Kimchi and Arama. The Syriac inscription is,
"a psalm without a name, concerning the distress of the people; but as to us, it intimates to us the victory and triumph of the worshippers.''.
CXXIX.
Out of some deadly peril Israel looks for deliverance to the righteousness of Jehovah, which from the childhood of the race has repeatedly manifested itself in help and deliverance. As the cord of bondage was cut in Egypt so will it be cut again, and the same shame and confusion overtake the present oppressors which fell upon the Pharaohs. But of the precise time and occasion there is no indication. The two stanzas into which the poem falls would be perfectly similar but for the last line, which looks suspiciously like an after addition of some copyist to bring the harvest scene into exact correspondence with the picture in Ruth. (See Note to Psalm 129:8.)
Israel’s chequered history supplies a ground of hope in a time of anxiety. Often as it has been oppressed by enemies, Jehovah has not suffered it to succumb entirely (Psalm 129:1-4). And now once more the malignant foes of Zion shall perish before they have matured their plots against her (Psalm 129:5-8).
The Psalm corresponds in length, style, and the general tenor of its contents, to Psalms 124. Israel is introduced as the speaker in both (‘Let Israel say’): the figure of rhetorical repetition is employed in the first two verses of both: in both Israel is face to face with malicious enemies, but confident of Jehovah’s protection. They may well have been written by the same poet in the same period, with reference to the dangers which threatened the community in the time of Nehemiah.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
Ps 129:1-8.
