Verse 2. - And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into [Heb. to. It is not clear that they entered the city. They may have delivered their message to the king, or to his representatives at the gates or to the people on the walls (2 Kings 18:18, 27)] the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,

네 은금은 내 것이요,.... 곧 권리로 그러하다는 것이 아니라, 아합이 자기를 대적할 수 없으므로 그것이 이미 자기 손에 들어온 것이나 다름없다고 여긴 것이다:

네 자녀들도 그러하니; 그 수가 많았으니, 그에게 아들이 적어도 일흔 명이나 있었기 때문이다, 2 Kings 10:1,
가장 아름다운 자들이 내 것이니라: 어떤 이들은 이를 더 무겁게 새기니, 마치 그의 의도가 그 사내아이들이 자기 손에 들어왔을 때에 그들과 더불어 그 부자연한 죄를 범하려는 것이었던 양 여긴다.
I challenge them as my own, and accordingly expect to have them forthwith delivered into my possession, if thou expectest peace with me.
벤하닷이 이런 요구를 하기 전까지 상당한 포위 기간이 지나 성읍이 극한 상황에 몰렸고, 아합이 전면 항복에는 미치지 않는 평화 조건을 요청하려고 사신들을 보냈다고 추정할 수 있다. 벤하닷은 자신의 요구가 거절되리라고 예상했고 또 그렇게 되기를 의도했을 것이다. 그러면 그가 분명 원하고 계획했던 대로 자유롭게 성읍을 약탈할 수 있었기 때문이다.
