INTRODUCTION TO Ezekiel 27
This chapter contains a lamentation on Tyre; setting forth her former grandeur, riches, and commerce; her ruin and destruction; and the concern of others on that account. The prophet is bid to take up his lamentation concerning it, Ezekiel 27:1, observing her situation and magnificence, of which she boasted, Ezekiel 27:3, describing the excellency of her shipping and naval stores, Ezekiel 27:5, declaring who were her mariners, pilots, and caulkers, Ezekiel 27:8, her military men, Ezekiel 27:10 her several merchants, and the things they traded in with her in her fairs and markets, Ezekiel 27:12, then follows an account of her destruction, Ezekiel 27:26, the lamentation of pilots and mariners because of it, Ezekiel 27:28, and of the kings and inhabitants of the isles, and merchants of the people, Ezekiel 27:33.
XXVII.
This chapter has been very well called “The Dirge of Tyre.” It is a lamentation over its fall, not because the prophet could wish it to be otherwise, but simply because of the terror and sorrowfulness of the event itself. It is unique among Scripture representations in the fulness of detail with which the greatness of Tyre is described; but this is quite in accordance with the peculiarity of Ezekiel’s mind. The description is carried out under the figure of a well-built ship, thoroughly manned and equipped, sailing everywhere, engaged in lucrative commerce; but at last, brought into rough seas and storm, she is wrecked, and sinks. This prolonged figure is generally well sustained, although, after the manner of this prophet, the reality is occasionally allowed to break through for the sake of clearness and emphasis.
The whole lamentation so much explains itself that it will only be necessary to subjoin brief notes on passages that, in our version especially, are not altogether clear.
Ch. 27. Dirge over the Downfall of Tyre
The lament represents Tyre under the figure of a gallant, richly-laden ship, steered by her pilots into dangerous waters and suffering shipwreck. The passage has three main divisions:
(1) Ezekiel 27:1-11. The ship, her timbers, furnishings and manning.
(2) Ezekiel 27:12-25. The wares and merchandise with which the nations lade her.
(3) Ezekiel 27:26-36. Her shipwreck: consternation of seafaring men (Ezekiel 27:26-31); their lament over her (Ezekiel 27:32-36).
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
The word of the Lord came again unto me,.... Upon the same subject, the destruction of Tyre:
saying; as follows:
