2절. 자만은 가르침을 받을 수 없게 만들지만, 겸손한 자는 지혜롭게 자란다(잠언 16:18; 18:12 비교).

3절. '인도한다'는 목자처럼 이끈다는 뜻이다(잠언 6:7; 시편 78:52). '패역함'은 악한 성질이다. '멸한다'는 폭력적으로 멸한다는 뜻이다.

5절. '곧게 한다'는 '평탄하게 한다'는 뜻이다. 악한 길들은 평탄하지 않다(잠언 13:17).

6절. '그들을 건진다'는 악에서 건진다는 뜻이다. 악인은 자기 행위로 말미암아 그 악을 당한다(잠언 5:22; 시편 9:16).

7절. '기대가 ... 사라진다'는 죽음이 그의 모든 계획을 끊어 버리기 때문이다(누가복음 16:25). '불의한 자의 소망'은 더 낫게는 '재물의 소망' 또는 '힘의 소망'이다(이사야 40:29 히브리어 비교). 이것은 앞 절의 생각을 더 진전시킨다. 이익에 대한 소망마저도 그와 함께 죽는다.
