INTRODUCTION TO Proverbs 4
In this chapter Solomon advises to seek after wisdom, to avoid bad company, and to continue in the right paths of goodness and truth: he excites attention to what he had to say, from the relation he stood in to the persons addressed; from the nature of his instructions, which were good and profitable; and from his own example, in attending to those his parents gave him, Proverbs 4:1; He exhorts above all things to get wisdom, from the superior excellency of it, and from the preservation, promotion, and honour, to be had by it, Proverbs 4:5; and he further enforces big exhortations, from their being the means of a comfortable life, and of the prolongation of it, and of leading in a right way without straitness or stumbling, Proverbs 4:10. And then proceeds to caution against bad company, and going into a bad way of life; which is enforced from the mischief done by those that walk in it, and from the darkness of it, to which the path of the just is opposed, Proverbs 4:14. And the exhortation to attend to and observe his instructions, and keep them, is repeated, from the consideration of their being life and health to them, Proverbs 4:20; and that they might be preserved, and not departed from, direction's are given about ordering the heart, mouth, lips, eyes, and feet, Proverbs 4:23.

훈계--배움의 내용이다(잠언 1:5). 그가 받은 것과 같다(예레미야애가 3:1).
"아들들아"라는 말은 늘 그렇듯 새로운 단락의 시작을 나타낸다. 잠 3:27-35의 삽입부가 끝난 뒤, 다시 익숙한 아버지의 권면 어조로 돌아간다.
아이들아, 들으라 - 오라, 나의 제자들아. 한 아버지가 자기 아이를 어떻게 가르쳤는지 들으라. 내가 내 아버지에게서 받은 것을 너희에게 준다. 그것들은 지혜롭고 애정 깊은 부모가 자기 외아들, 곧 자기 사랑의 특별한 대상이며 또한 다정한 어머니의 사랑의 대상인 아들에게 준 가르침이었다.
그는 자신이 받은 가르침, 또 이제 그들에게 주려는 가르침이 그 종류 가운데 가장 탁월한 것임을 보이기 위해 이처럼 주제를 도입한다. 이로써 그는 그들의 주의를 확보하고 그들의 마음으로 들어가는 길을 만들었다. 교훈으로 가르치는 것은 좋다. 본보기로 가르치는 것은 더 낫다. 그러나 교훈과 본보기를 함께 가르치는 것이 가장 좋다.
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father,.... Either of God their father, as Gersom interprets it; or rather of Solomon their father: and so he recommends his instruction from the relation he stood in to them; for, since he was their father, he would give them no bad instruction; and, since they were his children, they ought to receive it: by whom are meant, not his children in a natural sense, or the children of his body; but his disciples, such who applied to him for knowledge, and whom he undertook to learn;
and attend to know understanding; what would serve to enlighten, enlarge, improve, and inform their understandings; what would lead them into the knowledge and understanding of things divine and spiritual, and which would be worth knowing; and of having their understandings stored and enriched with.
Solomon showeth the excellency of his doctrine, Proverbs 4:1-4. His counsel to get wisdom, Proverbs 4:5,6, and understanding, Proverbs 4:7. The honour which cometh thereby, Proverbs 4:8,9. The good effects of it, Proverbs 4:10-12. He dehorts from the paths of the wicked, by the evil consequences thereof, Proverbs 4:13-19; and exhorteth to keep several precepts for the better government of himself, Proverbs 4:20; concerning his eyes, Proverbs 4:21,22, his heart, Proverbs 4:23, his mouth, Proverbs 4:24, and his feet, Proverbs 4:25-27.
Of a father; of me your teacher, who have paternal authority over you, and affection to you.
