INTRODUCTION TO Proverbs 6
In this chapter the wise man dissuades from rash suretyship; exposes the sin of idleness; describes a wicked man; makes mention of seven things hateful to God; exhorts to attend to parental instructions and precepts, and cautions against adultery. Suretyship is described, Proverbs 6:1; and represented as a snare and a net, in which men are taken, Proverbs 6:2; and advice is given what to do in such a case, for safety in it, and deliverance from it, Proverbs 6:3; The sin of slothfulness is exposed, by observing the industry of the ant, Proverbs 6:6; by expostulating with the sluggard for his continuance in sloth, and by mimicking him, Proverbs 6:9; and by the poverty it brings upon him, Proverbs 6:11. Then a naughty wicked man is described, by his mouth, eyes, feet, fingers, and heart, whose ruin is sudden and inevitable, Proverbs 6:11. The seven things hateful to God are particularly named, Proverbs 6:16. And next the exhortation in some preceding chapters is reassumed, to attend to the instructions of parents; which will be found ornamental, pleasant, and useful, Proverbs 6:20. Especially to preserve from the lewd woman cautioned against, Proverbs 6:24; whose company is dissuaded from; on account of the extreme poverty and distress she brings persons to, and even danger of life, Proverbs 6:26; from the unavoidable ruin such come into, Proverbs 6:27; from the sin of uncleanness being greater than that of theft, Proverbs 6:30; from the folly the adulterer betrays; from the destruction of his soul, and the disgrace he brings on himself, Proverbs 6:32; and from the rage and irreconcilable offence of the husband of the adulteress, Proverbs 6:34.

보증 — 예컨대 다윗이 형들에게서 받아 돌아오게 되어 있던 ‘증표’(삼상 17:18), 곧 지불을 담보하는 보증을 뜻한다. 초기 이스라엘 사람들의 원시적인 상거래에서 이 말은 이러한 의미로 쓰였다.
잠언에 나오는 보증에 대한 경고에서는 페니키아인들과 접촉한 영향의 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 두로와 시돈의 상인들은 신용이 부를 이루는 한 요소로서 지닌 가치를 발견했던 것으로 보인다. 사람은 보증인을 세움으로써 물품을 얻거나, 형편이 좋지 않은 때 채권자의 독촉을 피하거나, 더 유리한 조건으로 돈을 빌릴 수 있었다. 그러한 보증을 서 주는 일은 한 친구가 다른 친구에게 베풀 수 있는 가장 친절한 호의 가운데 하나였을 것이다. 그러나 정당한 신용 제도와 나란히, 후대에도 그러했듯이, 그것을 악용한 사기성 모조품이 생겨났다. 페니키아인이나 유대인 대금업자들, 곧 여기서 ‘타인’이라 불리는 자들은 낭비하는 사람에게 기꺼이 돈을 빌려 주었다. 그 낭비하는 사람 또한 자기의 보증인이 되어 줄 동료, 곧 여기서 ‘친구’라 불리는 자를 어렵지 않게 찾았다. 몇 마디를 적고, 그 의무를 받아들였다는 표시로 단지 ‘손을 맞잡는’ 것(난외주 참조)에 불과한 형식처럼 보였으며, 그것으로 전부였다. 이를 거절하는 것은 우정에 어긋나는 일처럼 여겨졌을 것이다. 그러나 교사가 청중에게 경고하듯이, 그 부주의하고 나약한 한순간이 치욕으로 이어지는 긴 사슬의 첫 고리가 될 수 있었다. 그 사슬은 사람을 괴롭히고 초조하게 하며 지치게 하고, 삶의 모든 평안을 빼앗았다. 대부분의 고대 민족의 법처럼 가혹하고 엄격했던 유대인의 채무법은 그에게 조금도 완화되지 않은 채 집행될 수 있었다. 돈과 토지를 잃을 수 있었고, 그가 누운 침상마저 압류되며 등에 걸친 옷까지 벗겨질 수 있었다(잠 20:16; 22:27). 더 오래되고 관대했던 율법(출 22:25-27)은 당시에는 이미 거의 지켜지지 않았던 것으로 보인다. 그는 평생 종살이에 놓일 수 있었으며, 백성이 희년을 기억하고 준수할 만큼 신앙적일 때에만 그해에 구제받을 가능성이 있었다. 그의 아내와 아들들과 딸들도 그 종살이에 함께 놓일 수 있었다(느 5:3-5). 그가 출 21:2에 따라 돈 주고 산 이스라엘 종에게 주어졌던 특권을 주장할 수 있었는지도 확실하지 않았다. 이와 같은 악에 대해서는 아무리 자주, 아무리 절박하게 경고해도 지나치지 않았다.
‘네 손을 쳤다면’ — 계약을 지키겠다는 약속을 나타내는 자연스러운 상징이다. 여기서는 다른 사람의 빚을 갚겠다는 뜻이다. 잠 17:18; 22:26; 욥 17:3; 겔 17:18을 비교하라.
네 친구를 위해 보증을 섰다면 - לרעך 레레아카, 곧 네 이웃을 위해, 다시 말해 어떤 사람이든 그를 위해 보증했다면이라는 뜻이다. 네가 다른 사람을 위하여 자신을 담보로 내걸면, 너는 그 사람에게서 짐을 덜어 네 자신의 어깨 위에 올려놓는 것이다. 그리고 그가 법과 공의의 요구 사이에 서 줄 사람이 생겼다는 것을 알게 되면, 그는 거의 책임감을 느끼지 않을 것이다. 그의 노력하려는 정신은 마비되고, 그 결과에 대한 무관심이 뒤따를 것이다. 그의 인격은 거의 손상되지 않고, 그의 재산도 아무 손해를 입지 않는다. 그의 친구가 모든 짐을 지기 때문이다. 어쩌면 그가 이 짐을 대신 진 바로 그 사람이 그를 냉대하고, 보증의 회복이 요구될까 두려워 친구의 눈앞과 면전까지 피할 수도 있다. 네가 줄 수 있는 것은 주라. 그러나 극단적인 경우가 아니라면 아무를 위해서도 보증을 서지 말라. 입으로 한 번 약속한 뒤 손을 치거나 악수하는 것은 그 약정을 확정하는 것으로 여겨졌다. 이렇게 하여 그 사람은 자기 입의 말로 올무에 걸리게 되었다.
My son, if thou be surety for thy friend,.... To another; hast engaged thyself by promise or bond, or both, to pay a debt for him, if he is not able, or if required; or hast laid thyself under obligation to any, to see the debt of another paid;
if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger; or "to" him (b); whom thou knowest not, and to whom thou owest nothing; and hast given him thine hand upon it, as well as thy word and bond, that what such an one owes him shall be paid; a gesture used in suretyship for the confirmation of it, Proverbs 17:18; or, "for a stranger" (c) And the sense is, either if thou art become bound for a friend of thine, and especially if for a stranger thou knowest little or nothing of, this is a piece of rashness and weakness; or, as Gersom, if thou art a surety to thy friend for a stranger, this also is a great inadvertency and oversight. It is a rash and inconsiderate entering into suretyship that is here cautioned against; doing it without inquiring into, and having sufficient knowledge of the person engaged for; and without considering whether able to answer the obligation, if required, without hurting a man's self and family; otherwise suretyship may lawfully be entered into, and good be done by it, and no hurt to the surety himself and family. Jarchi interprets it of the Israelites engaging themselves to the Lord at Sinai, to keep his commandments.

Surety, to wit, rashly, without considering for whom or how far thou dost oblige thyself, or how thou shalt discharge the debt, if occasion require it. Otherwise suretiship in some cases may be not only lawful, but an act of justice, and prudence, and charity. See Genesis 42:37 43:9 Philemon 1:19. Or, to (as this prefix most commonly signifies) a friend. Stricken thy hand; obliged thyself by giving thy hand, or joining thy hands with another man’s, as the custom then was in such cases; of which see Job 17:3 Proverbs 17:18 22:26. With a stranger; with the creditor, whom he calls a stranger, because the usurers in Israel, who lent money to others for their necessary occasions, upon condition of paying use for it, were either heathens, or were reputed as bad as heathens, because this practice was forbidden by God’s law, Deu 23:9. Or, to or for a stranger; for here is the same prefix which is rendered for in the former clause. And so he may imply, that whether a man be surety to or for a friend, or to or for a stranger, the case and course to be used is much of the same kind.
