And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

직역: Nun의 아들 Joshua가 Shittim에서 두 사람을 은밀히 정탐하러 보내며 Jericho와 그 땅을 보라고 말했다. 그들은 가서 Rahab이라는 여인의 집에 들어가 거기 머물렀다.

And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.

의미: 정탐꾼들의 방문은 곧 Jericho 왕에게 알려지고, 도시는 침투를 경계하게 된다.

구문: it was told는 수동 구조로 보고가 전달되었음을 말한다. there came men은 사람들이 왔다는 도치형이고, to search out the country는 온 목적을 나타낸다.

기억: Joshua 2:2 - Jericho's king hears Israelite men came to search the country.

And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.

직역: Jericho 왕이 Rahab에게 사람을 보내어 네게 와서 네 집에 들어온 사람들을 내놓으라, 그들이 온 땅을 정탐하러 왔다고 말했다.

의미: 왕은 Rahab의 집에 들어간 사람들이 정탐꾼임을 알고 그들을 넘기라고 명령한다.

구문: Bring forth는 직접 명령이다. that are come to thee와 which are entered into thine house는 the men을 설명하는 관계절이다. for they be come은 이유를 제시한다.

And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were:

구문: took, hid, said는 연속 동작을 만든다. wist not은 knew not의 고어이고, whence they were는 그들이 어디서 왔는지를 묻는 간접의문 구조다.

기억: Joshua 2:4 - Rahab hid the men and said, I wist not whence they were.

And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.

직역: 성문을 닫을 때쯤, 어두워졌을 때 그 사람들이 나갔다. 그들이 어디로 갔는지는 내가 알지 못한다. 빨리 뒤쫓으라, 그러면 그들을 따라잡을 것이라고 Rahab이 말했다.

의미: Rahab은 정탐꾼들이 이미 성 밖으로 나갔다고 말해 추격자들을 다른 방향으로 보낸다.

구문: it came to pass...that은 사건 발생을 도입하는 KJV식 구조다. whither the men went I wot not은 목적지를 앞세운 어순이며, pursue after them quickly는 명령형이다.

기억: Joshua 2:5 - Rahab says the men went out when it was dark.

But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

구문: For we have heard how...and what...은 Rahab이 아는 이유를 두 사건으로 설명한다. whom ye utterly destroyed는 Sihon and Og를 설명하는 관계절이다.

기억: Joshua 2:10 - Rahab heard of the Red sea and Sihon and Og.

And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:

직역: 그러므로 이제, 내가 너희에게 친절을 베풀었으니, 너희도 내 아버지의 집에 친절을 베풀고 내게 참된 증표를 주겠다고 LORD로 내게 맹세해 달라고 Rahab이 부탁한다.

의미: Rahab은 정탐꾼들을 살려 준 대가로 자기 가족의 생명을 보장하는 맹세와 확실한 표징을 요구한다.

구문: Now therefore는 앞의 고백에서 요청으로 넘어가는 연결어다. swear unto me by the LORD는 맹세의 대상을 나타내고, since는 이유를 제시한다.

기억: Joshua 2:12 - Rahab asks for kindness and a true token.

And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

직역: 그리고 너희가 내 아버지와 어머니와 형제들과 자매들과 그들이 가진 모든 것을 살려 두고, 우리의 생명을 죽음에서 건져 달라는 것이다.

And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

기억: Joshua 2:16 - hide in the mountain three days.

And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

직역: 그 사람들이 그녀에게 말했다. 네가 우리에게 맹세하게 한 이 맹세에 관하여 우리는 책임이 없게 될 것이다.

의미: 정탐꾼들은 약속이 무조건적인 것이 아니라 Rahab이 지켜야 할 조건이 있음을 밝힌다.

기억: Joshua 2:17 - We will be blameless of this thine oath.

Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.

직역: 보라, 우리가 그 땅에 들어올 때 네가 우리를 내려보낸 그 창문에 이 주홍색 실 줄을 매야 한다. 그리고 네 아버지와 어머니와 형제들과 네 아버지의 온 집안을 네게로, 곧 집 안으로 데려와야 한다.

And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

¶ So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them:

기억: Joshua 2:23 - the two men return and tell Joshua all that befell them.

And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

직역: 그들이 Joshua에게 말했다. 참으로 LORD께서 온 땅을 우리 손에 넘겨주셨다. 이는 그 땅의 모든 주민까지도 우리 때문에 낙담하기 때문이다.
