The Empty Tomb

¹Nowe the first day of the weeke came Marie Magdalene, early when it was yet darke, vnto the sepulchre, and sawe the stone taken away from the tombe.

²Then she ranne, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Iesus loued, and saide vnto them, They haue taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we knowe not where they haue laid him.

³Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple, and they came vnto the sepulchre.

⁴So they ranne both together, but the other disciple did outrunne Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

⁵And he stouped downe, and sawe the linnen clothes lying: yet went he not in.

⁶Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and sawe the linnen clothes lye,

⁷And the kerchiefe that was vpon his head, not lying with the linnen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by it selfe.

⁸Then went in also the other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he sawe it, and beleeued.

⁹For as yet they knewe not the Scripture, That he must rise againe from the dead.

¹⁰And the disciples went away againe vnto their owne home.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹But Marie stoode without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she bowed her selfe into the sepulchre,

¹²And sawe two Angels in white, sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feete, where the body of Iesus had laien.

¹³And they said vnto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She said vnto them, They haue taken away my Lord, and I know not where they haue laide him.

¹⁴When she had thus said, she turned her selfe backe, and sawe Iesus standing, and knewe not that it was Iesus.

¹⁵Iesus saith vnto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She supposing that he had bene the gardener, said vnto him, Sir, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

¹⁶Iesus saith vnto her, Marie. She turned her selfe, and said vnto him, Rabboni, which is to say, Master.

¹⁷Iesus saith vnto her, Touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but goe to my brethren, and say vnto them, I ascend vnto my Father, and to your Father, and to my God, and your God.

¹⁸Marie Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seene the Lord, and that he had spoken these things vnto her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

¹⁹The same day then at night, which was the first day of the weeke, and when the doores were shut where the disciples were assembled for feare of the Iewes, came Iesus and stoode in the middes, and saide to them, Peace be vnto you.

²⁰And when he had so saide, he shewed vnto them his handes, and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they had seene the Lord.

²¹Then saide Iesus to them againe, Peace be vnto you: as my Father sent me, so sende I you.

²²And when he had saide that, he breathed on them, and saide vnto them, Receiue the holy Ghost.

²³Whosoeuers sinnes ye remit, they are remitted vnto them: and whosoeuers sinnes ye reteine, they are reteined.

The Doubt and Faith of Thomas

²⁴But Thomas one of the twelue, called Didymus, was not with them when Iesus came.

²⁵The other disciples therefore saide vnto him, We haue seene the Lord: but he said vnto them, Except I see in his handes the print of the nailes, and put my finger into the print of the nailes, and put mine hand into his side, I will not beleeue it.

²⁶And eight dayes after, againe his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Then came Iesus, when the doores were shut, and stood in the middes, and said, Peace be vnto you.

²⁷After saide he to Thomas, Put thy finger here, and see mine hands, and put forth thine hand, and put it into my side, and be not faithlesse, but faithfull.

²⁸Then Thomas answered, and said vnto him, Thou art my Lord, and my God.

²⁹Iesus said vnto him, Thomas, because thou hast seene me, thou beleeuest: blessed are they that haue not seene, and haue beleeued.

³⁰And many other signes also did Iesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this booke.

³¹But these things are written, that ye might beleeue, that Iesus is that Christ that Sonne of God, and that in beleeuing ye might haue life through his Name.

Avoid Strife and Pursue Harmony

¹Better is a dry morsell, if peace be with it, then an house full of sacrifices with strife.

²A discrete seruant shall haue rule ouer a lewde sonne, and hee shall deuide the heritage among the brethren.

³As is the fining pot for siluer, and the fornace for golde, so the Lord trieth the heartes.

⁴The wicked giueth heed to false lippes, and a lyer hearkeneth to the naughtie tongue.

⁵Hee that mocketh the poore, reprocheth him, that made him: and he that reioyceth at destruction, shall not be vnpunished.

⁶Childres children are the crowne of the elders: and the glory of ye children are their fathers.

⁷Hie talke becommeth not a foole, much lesse a lying talke a prince.

⁸A rewarde is as a stone pleasant in the eyes of them that haue it: it prospereth, whithersoeuer it turneth.

⁹Hee that couereth a transgression, seeketh loue: but hee that repeateth a matter, separateth the prince.

¹⁰A reproofe entereth more into him that hath vnderstanding, then an hundreth stripes into a foole.

¹¹A sedicious person seeketh onely euill, and a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

¹²It is better for a man to meete a beare robbed of her whelpes, then a foole in his follie.

¹³He that rewardeth euil for good, euil shall not depart from his house.

¹⁴The beginning of strife is as one that openeth the waters: therefore or the contention be medled with, leaue off.

¹⁵He that iustifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the iust, euen they both are abomination to the Lord.

¹⁶Wherefore is there a price in the hand of the foole to get wisdome, and he hath none heart?

¹⁷A friende loueth at all times: and a brother is borne for aduersitie.

¹⁸A man destitute of vnderstanding, toucheth the hande, and becommeth suretie for his neighbour.

¹⁹He loueth transgression, that loueth strife: and he that exalteth his gate, seeketh destruction.

²⁰The froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a naughtie tongue, shall fall into euill.

²¹He that begetteth a foole, getteth himselfe sorow, and the father of a foole can haue no ioy.

²²A ioyfull heart causeth good health: but a sorowfull minde dryeth the bones.

²³A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosome to wrest the wayes of iudgement.

²⁴Wisdome is in the face of him that hath vnderstanding: but the eyes of a foole are in the corners of the world.

²⁵A foolish sonne is a griefe vnto his father, and a heauines to her that bare him.

²⁶Surely it is not good to condemne the iust, nor that ye princes should smite such for equitie.

²⁷Hee that hath knowledge, spareth his wordes, and a man of vnderstanding is of an excellent spirit.

²⁸Euen a foole (when he holdeth his peace) is counted wise, and hee that stoppeth his lips, prudent.

Stand Firm in the Lord and Be of the Same Mind

¹Therefore, my brethre, beloued and longed for, my ioy and my crowne, so continue in the Lord, yee beloued.

²I pray Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of one accord in the Lord,

³Yea, and I beseech thee, faithfull yokefellow, helpe those women, which laboured with me in the Gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowe labourers, whose names are in the booke of life.

Rejoice Always, Turn Anxiety into Prayer

⁴Reioyce in the Lord alway, againe I say, reioyce.

⁵Let your patient minde be knowen vnto all men. The Lord is at hand.

⁶Be nothing carefull, but in all thinges let your requestes be shewed vnto God in praier, and supplication with giuing of thankes.

⁷And the peace of God which passeth all vnderstanding, shall preserue your heartes and mindes in Christ Iesus.

Think on Whatever Is True and Honorable

⁸Furthermore, brethre, whatsoeuer things are true, whatsoeuer things are honest, whatsoeuer thinges are iust, whatsoeuer thinges are pure, whatsoeuer thinges are worthie loue, whatsoeuer things are of good report, if there be any vertue, or if there be any praise, thinke on these things,

⁹Which yee haue both learned and receiued, and heard, and seene in mee: those things doe, and the God of peace shalbe with you.

The Secret of Contentment and God Who Supplies Every Need

¹⁰Nowe I reioyce also in the Lord greatly, that nowe at the last your care for mee springeth afresh, wherein notwithstanding ye were careful, but yee lacked opportunitie.

¹¹I speake not because of want: for I haue learned in whatsoeuer state I am, therewith to bee content.

¹²And I can be abased, and I can abounde: euery where in all things I am instructed, both to be full, and to be hungrie, and to abounde, and to haue want.

¹³I am able to do al things through the helpe of Christ, which strengtheneth me.

¹⁴Notwithstanding yee haue well done, that yee did communicate to mine affliction.

¹⁵And yee Philippians knowe also that in the beginning of the Gospell, when I departed from Macedonia, no Church communicated with me, concerning the matter of giuing and receiuing, but yee onely.

¹⁶For euen when I was in Thessalonica, yee sent once, and afterward againe for my necessitie,

¹⁷Not that I desire a gift: but I desire the fruit which may further your reckoning.

¹⁸Now I haue receiued all, and haue plentie: I was euen filled, after that I had receiued of Epaphroditus that which came from you, an odour that smellleth sweete, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasant to God.

¹⁹And my God shall fulfill all your necessities through his riches with glorie in Iesus Christ.

²⁰Vnto God euen our Father be praise for euermore, Amen.

Final Greetings and the Blessing of Grace

²¹Salute all the Saintes in Christ Iesus. The brethren, which are with me, greete you.

²²All the Saintes salute you, and most of all they which are of Cesars houshold.

²³The grace of our Lord Iesus Christ be with you all, Amen. ‘Written to the Philippians from Rome, and sent by Epaphroditus.’
