God declares to Jeremiah that not even Moses and Samuel, whose prayers had been so prevalent, could divert him from his purpose of punishing so wicked a people, Jeremiah 15:1. Accordingly their captivity is again announced in a variety of images so full of terror, Jeremiah 15:2-9, that the prophet complains of his own hard fate in being obliged to deliver such unwelcome messages, Jeremiah 15:10; for which too he is reproved, Jeremiah 15:11-14. Immediately he appeals to God for his sincerity, and supplicates pardon, Jeremiah 15:15-18; and God tempers his reproof with promising again to protect him in the faithful discharge of his duty, Jeremiah 15:19-21.

모세와 사무엘이 비록 — 모세는 여러 번 백성을 위하여 간구했고, 그 결과 백성은 용서받았다. 출애굽기 32:11 이하와 민수기 14:13을 보라. 사무엘도 백성을 위하여 기도했고 하나님께서 그의 기도를 들으셨다(사무엘상 7:9). 그러나 이제 이들이나 가장 거룩한 사람들이 이 백성을 위하여 간구하더라도 하나님께서는 그들을 용서하지 않으실 것이다.

Though Moses and Samuel - Moses had often supplicated for the people; and in consequence they were spared. See Exodus 32:11 and following verses, Numbers 14:13. Samuel also had prayed for the people, and God heard him, 1 Samuel 7:9; but if these or the most holy men were now to supplicate for this people, he would not spare them.
Cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth - Do not bring them into my presence by your prayers; let them go forth into captivity.

우리가 어디로 나아가리이까? 죽을 자는 죽음으로 — 어떤 이들은 여기서 죽음이라 불린 전염병으로 멸망할 것이다. 예레미야 18:21을 보라. 다른 이들은 전투와 성읍 약탈 중에 칼에 죽을 것이다. 또 다른 이들은 기근으로 죽으며, 생필품이 전혀 없어 굶어 죽을 것이다. 나머지는 포로로 끌려갈 것이다. 그들의 범죄 성격에 따라 서로 다른 종류의 형벌이 내려질 것이다. 어떤 사람은 이 방식으로, 다른 사람은 저 방식으로 벌을 받을 것이다.

Whither shall we go forth? - Such as are for death, to death - Some shall be destroyed by the pestilence, here termed death. See Jeremiah 18:21. Others shall be slain by the sword in battle, and in the sackage of cities. Others shall perish by famine, shall be starved to death through the mere want of the necessaries of life; and the rest shall go into captivity. There shall be different sorts of punishments inflicted on them according to the nature of their transgressions. Some shall be punished in one way, and some in another.

Jeremiah 15:4
내가 그들을 땅의 모든 나라 가운데로 옮겨 흩어지게 하리라 — 이는 여러 세대에 걸쳐 이어진 유대인들의 상태를 가리키는 듯하다. 이보다 더 문자 그대로 성취된 예언은 없으며, 지금도 하나님의 진리를 증언하는 상설 기념비로 남아 있다. 불신앙은 세계의 모든 문명국에서 만날 수 있는 흩어진 유대인들을 바라보고, 할 수 있다면 이 예언의 진리를 부정해 보라. 유대인들은 모든 민족 가운데 흩어져 있으면서도 한 국가를 이루지 못하며, 지상 어느 곳에서도 식민지조차 형성하지 못한다. 하나님의 진리와 공의를 보라!

I will cause them to be removed into an kingdoms of the earth - This seems to have respect to the succeeding state of the Jews in their different generations; and never was there a prophecy more literally fulfilled; and it is still a standing monument of Divine truth. Let infidelity cast its eyes on the scattered Jews whom it may meet with in every civilized nation of the world; and then let it deny the truth of this prophecy, if it can. The Jews are scattered through every nation, and yet are not a nation; nor do they form even a colony on any part of the face of the earth. Behold the truth and the justice of God!

Jeremiah 15:5
누가 돌이켜 네 안부를 묻겠느냐? — 아마도 해 아래에서 이보다 더 멸시받고 비천해진 민족은 없을 것이다. 유대인에게 친절을 베풀어야 한다고 생각하는 사람은 거의 없다. 사회에서 그들에 대한 평판은 나쁘며, 그들은 그것을 회복하는 데 전혀 마음을 쓰지 않는다.

Who shall go aside to ask how thou doest? - Perhaps there is not a more despised nor a more degraded people under the sun. Scarcely any one thinks himself called upon to do a kind office for a Jew. Their character is bad in society, and they are not at all solicitous to redeem it.

Jeremiah 15:6
내가 뜻을 돌이키기에 지쳤도다 — 내 목적을 거듭 바꾸는 데 지쳤다는 뜻이다. 나는 그들을 벌하려고 작정한 뒤에도 자주 자비를 베풀었다. 이제는 더 이상 그렇게 하지 않을 것이다. 그것은 무익하다. 나는 여러 번 그들의 약속을 믿어 주었지만, 그들은 매번 약속을 저버렸다.

I am weary with repenting - With repeatedly changing my purpose. I have often, after purposing to punish, showed them mercy. I will do it no longer; it is useless. I took them often at their promise, and in every instance they have failed.

Jeremiah 15:7
내가 키로 그들을 까부르리라 — 순수한 곡식은 하나도 없고 모두 쭉정이뿐이다.
그 땅의 성문들에서 — 공적인 재판이 행해지는 곳들을 가리킨다. 그곳에서 그들에게 내린 심판이 지극히 마땅했음이 드러날 것이다. 그리고 그들은 이처럼 까부르는 곳들에서 나와 포로로 끌려갈 것이다.

In the gates of the land - The places of public justice: and there it shall be seen that the judgments that have fallen upon them have been highly merited. And from these places of fanning they shall go out into their captivity.

Jeremiah 15:10
온 땅과 다투는 자라! — 온 국토, 곧 모든 동족과 다투는 자라는 뜻이다. 비록 그는 그들의 불쾌감을 살 만한 일을 전혀 하지 않았지만 그러했다.

Jeremiah 15:11

I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil - This was literally fulfilled; see Jeremiah 39:11, etc. Nebuchadnezzar had given strict charge to Nebuzaradan, commander in chief, to look well to Jeremiah, to do him no harm, and to grant him all the privileges he was pleased to ask.

Jeremiah 15:12
철이 북방의 철과 강철을 꺾겠느냐? — 우리의 미약한 군대가 갈대아인들의 세력에 맞서 이길 수 있겠느냐는 뜻이다. 여기서 강철로 번역한 נחשת 네호셰트(nechasheth)는 본래 놋쇠, 곧 구리에 주석을 섞은 합금을 뜻한다. 주석은 구리를 훨씬 단단하게 하여 날카로운 날을 유지하게 한다.

Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel? - Shall our weak forces be able to oppose and overcome the powers of the Chaldeans? נחשת nechasheth, which we here translate steel, property signifies brass or copper united with tin, which gives it much hardness, and enables it to bear a good edge.

Jeremiah 15:13
네 재산을 값없이 노략물로 내주리라 — 헤아릴 수 없이 귀중한 재산이 네 대적들에게 넘겨질 것이다. 또는 ‘값없이’란 네가 그 대가로 아무것도 받지 못한다는 뜻이다.

Jeremiah 15:15
주여, 나를 기억하시고 돌보소서 — 내가 포로로 끌려가지 않게 해 달라는 뜻이다. 실제로 그가 바벨론으로 끌려갔다는 기록은 없는 듯하다. 그는 성읍이 함락된 뒤 애굽으로 갔으며, 그곳에서 죽었거나 동족에게 죽임을 당했다.

Jeremiah 15:16
주의 말씀이 내 마음의 기쁨과 즐거움이 되었나이다 — 내가 예언의 말씀을 받았을 때 주께서 내게 베푸신 영예를 기뻐했고, 그들에게 주의 뜻을 충실히 증언했다. 그들이 내 원수가 된 것은 내 안에 어떤 악이 있었기 때문이 아니라 내가 주께 충실했기 때문이다.

Jeremiah 15:18
주께서 내게 아주 끊어지는 물과 같으시리이까? — 이는 한여름에 말라 버리는 샘을 뜻하거나, 모래 사막에서 공기가 솟아오르는 수증기에 특별히 작용하여 물처럼 보이게 하는 현상을 뜻한다. 여행자는 속아서 모래 사막 속 아름다운 호숫가에 이르렀다고 기뻐하지만, 아무리 더 나아가도 그것은 같은 거리에 있고 마침내 사라진다. 그는 물이 끊어져 모든 것이 환상이었음을 깨닫는다. 생계가 전적으로 주기적인 비에 달린 농부에게 비가 오지 않거나 평소 양에 미치지 못할 때의 실망보다 더 큰 것은 없다. 때로 벼를 뿌리면 매우 희망차게 싹이 트지만, 늦은 비가 내리지 않아 어린 벼가 가득한 논 전체가 시들어 죽는다.

Wilt thou be altogether unto me as - waters that fail? - Leaning either springs, which in the height of summer grow dry; or, like that phenomenon in the sandy desert, where, by a peculiar action of the air on the rising vapors, the resemblance of water is produced, so that the traveler, deceived, rejoices that he is come, in the sandy desert, to the verge of a beautiful lake; but the farther he travels, it is still at the same distance, and at last vanishes; and he finds the whole was an illusion, for the waters have failed. Nothing can exceed the disappointment of the farmer whose subsistence absolutely depends on the periodical rains, when these fail, or fall short of their usual quantity. Some times the rice is sown and springs up in the most promising manner; but the latter rains fail, and whole fields of young rice wither and perish.

Jeremiah 15:19
네가 돌아오면 — 회개하여 내게 돌아오면이라는 뜻이다.
내가 너를 다시 돌아오게 하리라 — 네 고국으로 회복시키겠다는 뜻이다. 그러나 어떤 이들은 이 말씀이 선지자의 사역과 관련하여 그에게 주어진 것이라고 생각한다. 그는 자신이 겪은 박해 때문에 몹시 불평했다. 주께서는 그를 책망하시고 예언의 은사를 거두려 하셨지만, 먼저 그에게 귀한 것을 천한 것에서 취하라고 권하신다. 곧 백성의 기만적인 말에 귀 기울이지 말고 하나님께서 주신 말씀을 담대히 선포하라는 것이다. 그가 백성에게 돌아갈 것이 아니라 백성이 그에게 돌아오게 해야 한다. 그러면 그는 하나님의 입과 같아질 것이다. 그의 말은 본래 그러했던 것처럼 참된 하나님의 말씀임이 드러날 것이며, 백성은 그것을 그렇게 인정하지 않을 수 없을 것이다.

If thou return - By repentance unto me, -
Then will I bring thee again - Restore thee to thy own country. But some think the words are spoken to the prophet in reference to his ministry. He had greatly repined because of the persecutions which he endured. The Lord reprehends him, and is about to take from him the prophetic gift; but exhorts him first to take the precious from the vile - not to attend to the deceitful words of the people, but boldly declare the message he had given him; not to return unto the people, but let the people return unto him. And then he should be as God's mouth - his words should appear to be what they were, the genuine words of God; and the people should be obliged to acknowledge them as such.

Jeremiah 15:21
내가 너를 악인의 손에서 건지리라 — 이 악한 백성의 권세에서 건지겠다는 뜻이다.
내가 너를 포악한 자의 손에서 구속하리라 — 갈대아 군대의 권세에서 구속하겠다는 뜻이다. 모든 일이 하나님께서 약속하신 그대로 이루어졌으니, 그분의 말씀은 하나도 땅에 떨어질 수 없기 때문이다.

And I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible - Out of the power of the Chaldean armies. Every thing took place as God had promised, for no word of his can ever fall to the ground.
