David's piety and his prayer we had an account of in the foregoing chapter; here follows immediately that which one might reasonably expect, an account of his prosperity; for those that seek first the kingdom of God and the righteousness thereof, as David did, shall have other things added to them as far as God sees good for them. Here is, I. His prosperity abroad. He conquered the Philistines (1Ch 18:1), the Moabites (1Ch 18:2), the king of Zobah (1Ch 18:3,4), the Syrians (1Ch 18:5-8), made the king of Hamath his tributary (1Ch 18:9-11), and the Edomites, 1Ch 18:12,13. II. His prosperity at home. His court and kingdom flourished, 1Ch 18:14-17. All this we had an account of before, 2Sa 8:1-18

David smites the Philistines, and takes Gath, 1 Chronicles 18:1. Reduces the Moabites, 1 Chronicles 18:2. Vanquishes Hadarezer, king of Zobah, 1 Chronicles 18:3, 1 Chronicles 18:4. Overcomes the Syrians of Damascus, and takes several of their cities, 1 Chronicles 18:5-8. Tou, king of Hamath, congratulates him on his victory, and sends him vessels of silver, gold, and brass, 1 Chronicles 18:9, 1 Chronicles 18:10. Those and the different spoils he had taken from the conquered nations, he dedicates to God, 1 Chronicles 18:11. Abishai defeats the Edomites, 1 Chronicles 18:12, 1 Chronicles 18:13. David reigns over all Israel, 1 Chronicles 18:14. His officers, 1 Chronicles 18:15-17.

The eighteenth and nineteenth chapters are the same with 2 Samuel 8:1 with very little variations, which are observed in the notes on them, to which the reader is referred.

This section represents the warlike aspect of David’s character, just as 1 Chronicles 15-17 portrayed him from the religious point of view, as zealous for the due observance of the Divine order in worship. The narratives are closely parallel to the corresponding ones in 2 Samuel, and are given in the same order. The variations, such as they are, may be accounted for (1) by mistakes of copyists; (2) by the chronicler’s habit of explaining difficult expressions, abridging what appeared needlessly prolix, and adding here and there small details from another source.

Ch. 1 Chronicles 18:1-17 (= 2 Samuel 8:1-18). A Summary of David’s Foreign Wars. David’s Officials

This chapter like the last is taken from 2 Sam. with a few omissions and variations. The Chronicler paraphrases (1 Chronicles 18:1; 1 Chronicles 18:17), omits (1 Chronicles 18:2), has a different reading (1 Chronicles 18:4; 1 Chronicles 18:8; 1 Chronicles 18:10; 1 Chronicles 18:12). In some cases the better reading is in Chron.

The campaigns (except perhaps that against Moab) seem to be narrated In chronological order. David first makes sure of his most pressing enemy the Philistines (1 Chronicles 18:1); then feeling safe towards the S.W. he turns towards the N.E. to secure on the Euphrates a station (valuable for trade) held by the Syrians of Zobah (1 Chronicles 18:3); the Syrians of Damascus fearing to be excluded from the River by David’s success come to the help of their kinsmen (1 Chronicles 18:5); lastly the Edomites, urged perhaps by the Syrians to make a diversion in their favour and thinking it safe to attack Judah during the absence of David, join in the war, but are signally defeated by a detachment under Joab and Abishai (1 Chronicles 18:12).

The war with Moab (1 Chronicles 18:2) is surprising, if it took place at an early date in David’s reign, for he seems to have been on specially friendly terms with the king of Moab during his exile; cp. 1 Samuel 22:3-4 and Kirkpatrick on 2 Samuel 8:2.

DAVID SUBDUES THE PHILISTINES AND MOABITES.

1. David . . . took Gath and her towns--The full extent of David's conquests in the Philistine territory is here distinctly stated, whereas in the parallel passage

(2Sa 8:1)

it was only described in a general way. Gath was the "Metheg-ammah," or "arm-bridle," as it is there called--either from its supremacy as the capital over the other Philistine towns, or because, in the capture of that important place and its dependencies, he obtained the complete control of his restless neighbors.
