In this chapter we have David setting and Solomon at the same time rising. I. The conclusion of David's reign with his life. 1. The charge he gives to Solomon upon his death-bed, in general, to serve God (1Ki 2:1-4), in particular, concerning Joab, Barzillai, and Shimei, 1Ki 2:5-9. 2. His death and burial, and the years of his reign, 1Ki 2:10,11. II. The beginning of Solomon's reign, 1Ki 2:12. Though he was to be a prince of peace, he began his reign with some remarkable acts of justice, 1. Upon Adonijah, whom he put to death for his aspiring pretensions, 1Ki 2:13-25. 2. Upon Abiathar, whom he deposed from the high priesthood for siding with Adonijah, 1Ki 2:26,27. 3. Upon Joab, who he put to death for his late treasons and former murders, 1Ki 2:28-35. 4. Upon Shimei, whom, for cursing David, he confined to Jerusalem (1Ki 2:36-38), and three years after, for transgressing the rules, put to death, 1Ki 2:39-46.

David leaves his dying charge with Solomon, relative to his own personal conduct, 1 Kings 2:1-4; to Joab, 1 Kings 2:5, 1 Kings 2:6; to Barzillai, 1 Kings 2:7; to Shimei, 1 Kings 2:8, 1 Kings 2:9. He dies, and Solomon is established in the kingdom, 1 Kings 2:10-12. Adonijah requests to have Abishag to wife, and is put to death by Solomon, 1 Kings 2:13-25. Abiathar the priest is banished to his estate at Anathoth, 1 Kings 2:26, 1 Kings 2:27. Joab, fearing for his life, flees to the horns of the altar, and is slain there by Benaiah, 1 Kings 2:28-34. Benaiah is made captain of the host in his stead, 1 Kings 2:35. Shimei is ordered to confine himself to Jerusalem, and never leave it on pain of death, 1 Kings 2:36-38. After three years he follows some of his runaway servants to Gath, and thereby forfeits his life, 1 Kings 2:39, 1 Kings 2:40. Solomon sends for him, upbraids him, and commands him to be slain by Benaiah, 1 Kings 2:41-46.

INTRODUCTION TO 1 Kings 2

This chapter gives an account of the charge David gave to his son Solomon, a little before his death, to walk in the ways of the Lord, 1 Kings 2:1; and of some instructions delivered to him concerning some particular persons he should either show favour to, or execute justice on, 1 Kings 2:5; and the next account in it is concerning his death and burial, and the years of his reign, 1 Kings 2:10; after which it relates an address of Bathsheba to Solomon in favour of Adonijah, which was refused, and the issue of it was his death, 1 Kings 2:12; and the deposition of Abiathar from the priesthood, 1 Kings 2:26; and the putting of Joab to death for his treason and murders, 1 Kings 2:28; in whose post Benaiah was put, as Zadok was in the place of Abiathar, 1 Kings 2:35; and lastly the confinement of Shimei in Jerusalem, who had cursed David, 1 Kings 2:36; who upon transgressing the orders given him was put to death, 1 Kings 2:39.

The narrative in this chapter still continues much in the same graphic style and detail as in the previous chapter. During the interval between the two chapters we have in 1 Chronicles 28, 29 the record of a great assembly of the “princes of Israel” and the whole realm—a solemn farewell of David to the people, with charge to aid in building the Temple, followed by offerings for it; and the making of “Solomon king the second time” (1Chronicles 29:22). This possibly represented his accession to the royalty not only over Judah, but over the rest of Israel, with formal acceptance by the representatives of all the tribes. (Comp. 1Kings 12:1, in respect of the accession of Rehoboam.) In this detailed record it is specially noticed (1Chronicles 28:2) that the old king “stood up on his feet,” as though the excitement of the great occasion had renewed for a time his strength, and enabled him to rise from his bed. It is also recorded that “all the sons of David,” who had apparently favoured Adonijah, submitted themselves to Solomon the king (1Chronicles 29:24).

1. David . . . charged Solomon his son--The charge recorded here was given to Solomon just before his death and is different from the farewell address delivered in public some time before

(1Ch 28:2-9).

It is introduced with great solemnity.

Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die,.... The number of his days fixed and determined by the Lord, Job 14:5; and which might be perceived as drawing nigh, both by himself and others, through the growing infirmities of old age, decline of nature, and various symptoms of an approaching dissolution which were upon him; see Genesis 47:29. Abarbinel observes, that he is called only David, not King David; because Solomon his son was now anointed king, and reigned in his stead; so in 1 Kings 1:10; but there is another reason given by some Jews (n), that no man, even a king, has power in the day of death; he is no king then, he has no rule over that, but that rules over him:

and he charged Solomon his son; gave him his last and dying charge:

saying; as follows.
