Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary

The scope of this chapter is much the same with that of the foregoing chapter—to confirm the promise of the restoration of the Jews, notwithstanding the present desolations of their country and dispersions of their people. And these promises have, both in type and tendency, a reference as far forward as to the gospel church, to which this second edition of the Jewish church was at length to resign its dignities and privileges. It is here promised, I. That the city shall be rebuilt and re-established "in statu quo—in its former state," Jer 33:1-6. II. That the captives, having their sins pardoned, shall be restored, Jer 33:7,8. III. That this shall redound very much to the glory of God, Jer 33:9. IV. That the country shall have both joy and plenty, Jer 33:10-14. V. That way shall be made for the coming of the Messiah, Jer 33:15,16. VI. That the house of David, the house of Levi, and the house of Israel, shall flourish again, and be established, and all three in the kingdom of Christ; a gospel ministry and the gospel church shall continue while the world stands, Jer 33:17-26.

The promises of Jeremiah 32 are confirmed, but with a more directly spiritual meaning. The prophet foreshows in it the happiness of the returning exiles, of which the culminating glory is Messiah's birth Jeremiah 33:15-16, in whom both the Levitical priesthood and the Davidic kingdom are combined Jeremiah 33:17-18, and God's covenant with mankind made perpetual Jeremiah 33:19-26.

In this chapter the prophet predicts a restoration of Israel and Judah to the favor of God, attended with such glorious circumstances as shall astonish all the world, Jeremiah 33:1-9. Their prosperity from that period is then described by a beautiful enumeration of circumstances, Jeremiah 33:10-13. Thus leads to the promise of the Messiah, the grand subject of the prophetical writings, and the happiness and stability which the children of Israel shall enjoy under his government; promises which, in so far as they respect the great body of the Jews, remain still to be fulfilled, Jeremiah 33:14-26.

INTRODUCTION TO Jeremiah 33

This chapter is a continuation of prophecies of spiritual blessings on the church of Christ in Gospel times, of which the return of the Jews from captivity, and the benefits following on that, were types. The place where Jeremiah had this prophecy communicated to him, the prison, Jeremiah 33:1; the author of it, Jehovah, who describes himself, Jeremiah 33:2; encourages the prophet to pray unto him, promising an answer, and a discovery of great and hidden things, Jeremiah 33:3; not so much concerning the destruction of the city, and the rebuilding it, Jeremiah 33:4; as spiritual blessings to the church, signified by it; such as a healthful state and condition through Christ, the sun of righteousness, arising with healing in his wings, and a revelation of abundance of peace and truth by him, Jeremiah 33:6; a release of captives, and a rebuilding of the church, Jeremiah 33:7; free and full forgiveness of all sins, Jeremiah 33:8; the church a praise in the whole earth; much joy in it, and glory to God by it, Jeremiah 33:9; spiritual pastors or shepherds feeding their flocks, and taking very diligent care of them, Jeremiah 33:12; a promise of the Messiah as a righteous Branch; as the Saviour and safeguard of his people; and as the Lord their righteousness, Jeremiah 33:14; an assurance of the continuance of the kingly and priestly offices in him, whereby the covenant of God with David and the Levites would be for ever secured, Jeremiah 33:17; and the chapter is concluded with a promise of the perseverance of the saints and people of God; which is represented as certain as the covenant with day and night, and as the ordinances of heaven and earth, in opposition to a suggestion to the contrary, Jeremiah 33:23.

Ch. Jeremiah 33:1-26. Renewed promise of return and of honour among the nations

For the late character of Jeremiah 33:14-26 of this ch. see introd. note there. Jeremiah 33:1-13 are also rejected by Schmidt, Co. and Du., while Gi. admits that they include a certain amount of interpolation, e.g. Jeremiah 33:2-3. The case against the earlier portion of the ch. seems far from proven, though Jeremiah 33:1-13 probably contain a considerable amount of editorial addition. The latter part of Jeremiah 33:1 suggests for the Jeremianic portion the same date as ch. 32.

The contents may be summarized as follows. (i) Jeremiah 33:1-3. Jehovah invites the prophet to call upon Him for teaching as to His secret purposes. (ii) Jeremiah 33:4-9. Resistance to the Chaldaeans will involve fruitless bloodshed; but afterwards there shall come to Judah and Israel healing and restoration from exile. Jerusalem shall be honoured of all nations, who shall be smitten with dismay when they behold Jehovah’s mercy towards her. (iii) Jeremiah 33:10-13. The cities and land that are now desolate shall once more flourish and abound in the joys of life, while flocks shall pasture without fear as in former time. (iv) Jeremiah 33:14-18. A righteous Ruler shall spring up in David’s line. Jerusalem shall be named “The Lord is our righteousness.” The permanence of the kingly and priestly line shall be securely established. (v) Jeremiah 33:19-26. The order of nature shall not be more fixed than the continuity of king and priests. The seed of David and the ministering Levites shall be as the stars or the sand for multitude. So far is Jehovah from rejecting His people that He will deliver and cherish them as certainly as day and night alternate in due succession by His ordinance.

Jeremiah 33:1

Moreover the word of the Lord - This was in the eleventh year of the reign of Zedekiah, Jeremiah being still shut up in prison: but he was now in the court of the prison, where the elders and the king's officers, etc., might consult him with the greater ease; for they continued to inquire, foolishly thinking, that if he would but prophesy good things, that these must come, or that he had sufficient power with God to induce him to alter his mind, - destroy the Chaldeans, and deliver the city.
