The former chapter directed the priests how to convict a leper of ceremonial uncleanness. No prescriptions are given for his cure; but, when God had cured him, the priests are in this chapter directed how to cleanse him. The remedy here is only adapted to the ceremonial part of his disease; but the authority Christ gave to his ministers was to cure the lepers, and so to cleanse them. We have here, I. The solemn declaration of the leper's being clean, with the significant ceremony attending it, Le 14:1-9. II. The sacrifices which he was to offer to God eight days after, Le 14:10-32. III. The management of a house in which appeared signs of a leprosy, Le 14:33-53. And the conclusion and summary of this whole matter, Le 14:54-57, etc.

Introduction to the sacrifices and ceremonies to be used in cleansing the leper, Leviticus 14:1-3. Two living birds, cedar-wood, scarlet, and hyssop, to be brought for him who was to be cleansed, Leviticus 14:4. One of the birds to be killed, Leviticus 14:5; and the living bird, with the cedar-wood, scarlet, and hyssop, to be dipped in the blood, and to be sprinkled on him who had been infected with the leprosy, Leviticus 14:6, Leviticus 14:7; after which he must wash his clothes, shave his head, eye brows, beard, etc., bathe himself, tarry abroad seven days, Leviticus 14:8, Leviticus 14:9; on the eighth day he must bring two he-lambs, one ewe lamb, a tenth deal of flour, and a log of oil, Leviticus 14:10; which the priest was to present as a trespass-offering, wave-offering, and sin-offering before the Lord, Leviticus 14:11-13. Afterwards he was to sprinkle both the blood and oil on the person to be cleansed, Leviticus 14:14-18. The atonement made by these offerings, Leviticus 14:19, Leviticus 14:20. If the person were poor, one lamb, with the flour and oil, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, were only required, Leviticus 14:21, Leviticus 14:22. These to be presented, and the blood and oil applied as before, Leviticus 14:23-32. Laws and ordinances relative to houses infected by the leprosy, vv. 33-48. An atonement to be made in order to cleanse the house, similar to that made for the healed leper, Leviticus 14:49-53. A summary of this and the preceding chapter, relative to leprous persons, garments, and houses, Leviticus 14:54-56. The end for which these different laws were given, Leviticus 14:57.

INTRODUCTION TO Leviticus 14

This chapter treats of the purification of lepers, and the rules to be observed therein; and first what the priest was to do for his cleansing when brought to him, by making use of two birds, with cedar wood, scarlet and hyssop, as directed, Leviticus 14:1; what he was to do for himself, shaving off all his hair, and washing his flesh and clothes in water, Leviticus 14:8; the offerings to be offered up for him, two he lambs and one ewe lamb, and a meat offering, with a particular account of the use of the blood of the trespass offering, and of oil put upon the tip of his right ear, the thumb of his right hand, and the great toe of his right foot, Leviticus 14:10; but if poor, only one lamb was required, a meat offering of one tenth deal, and two turtle doves or two young pigeons, and blood and oil used as before, Leviticus 14:21; next follow an account of leprosy in an house, and the signs of it, and the rules to judge of it, Leviticus 14:33; and the manner of cleansing from it, Leviticus 14:49; and the chapter is closed with a recapitulation of the several laws concerning the various sorts of leprosy in this and the preceding chapter, Leviticus 14:54.

The purification of the leper (ch. Leviticus 14:1-32)

The ceremonies to be observed are of two kinds:

(1)  before the leper is brought into the camp,

(a)  by the priest (Leviticus 14:2-7),

(b)  by the leper (Leviticus 14:8),

  (2)  after the leper is readmitted to the camp, but remaining outside his tent seven days,

(c)  by the leper on the seventh day (Leviticus 14:9),

(d)  the sacrificial ritual on the eighth day (Leviticus 14:10-20),

(e)  modification for the poor leper (Leviticus 14:21-32).

The leper was regarded (1) as one dead (see on Leviticus 13:45 f.), (2) as unclean, (3) as smitten of God: hence the ceremonial indicated (1) restoration to life, (2) removal of uncleanness, (3) readmission to God’s presence.

(1) is thought to represent the older rite, while Leviticus 14:14-20 are later, giving more detail and laying greater stress on religious motives.

The leper was excluded not only from the sanctuary but from the camp. The ceremony of restoration which he had to undergo was therefore twofold. The first part, performed outside the camp, entitled him to come within and to mix with his brethren, Leviticus 14:3-9. The second part, performed in the court of the tabernacle and separated from the first by an interval of seven days, restored him to all the privileges of the covenant with Yahweh, Leviticus 14:10-32.
