Adam Clarke's Commentary and Critical Notes on the Bible
Asa succeeds his father Abijah, reigns piously, and has peace for ten years, 2 Chronicles 14:1. He makes a great reformation in Judah, and builds cities of defense, 2 Chronicles 14:2-7. His military strength, 2 Chronicles 14:8. He is attacked by Zerah the Ethiopian, with an immense army; Asa cries to the Lord, attacks the Ethiopians, and gives them a total overthrow, 2 Chronicles 14:9-12. He takes several of their cities, their cattle, etc., and returns to Jerusalem, laden with spoils, 2 Chronicles 14:13-15.
INTRODUCTION TO 2 Chronicles 14
This chapter relates the death of Abijah, and the succession of Asa in his stead, 2 Chronicles 14:1, gives a good character of the latter for his reformation in religion, and for the care he took for the safety and protection of his subjects, 2 Chronicles 14:2, and an account is given of a large army of Ethiopians that came against him, over whom he crying to the Lord, and trusting in him, by his help obtained a complete victory, 2 Chronicles 14:9.
Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
2Ch 14:1-5.
ASA DESTROYS IDOLATRY.
1. In his days the land was quiet ten years--This long interval of peace was the continued effect of the great battle of Zemaraim (compare
1Ki 15:11-14).
Asa his son reigned - If Rehoboam was (1 Kings 12:8 note) not more than 21 years old at his accession, Asa, when he mounted the throne, must have been a mere boy, not more than 10 or 11 years of age.
The land was quiet ten years - The great blow struck by Abijah 2 Chronicles 13:15-19, his alliance with Syria 1 Kings 15:19, and the rapid succession of sovereigns in Israel during the earlier part of Asa's reign 1 Kings 15:25-33, would naturally prevent disturbance on the part of the northern kingdom. The tender age of Asa himself would be a bar to warlike enterprises on the part of Judah.
The land was quiet ten years - Calmet thinks these years should be counted from the fifth to the fifteenth of Asa's reign.
So Abijah slept with his fathers, 1 Kings 15:8.
and Asa his son reigned in his stead; in his days the land was quiet ten years; the Targum is, the land of Israel; but much better the Septuagint, the land of Judah; these ten years, in which it had rest from war, were the first three years of Asa's reign, and the first seven of Baasha's, according to Jarchi, and which seems right; after which there was war between them all their days, see 1 Kings 15:32.
Asa is made king; he destroyeth idolatry, 2 Chronicles 14:1-5. Having peace, he strengtheneth his kingdom with forts and armies, 2 Chronicles 14:6-8. In a strait, calling on God, he overthroweth Zerah, and spoileth the Ethiopians, 2 Chronicles 14:9-15.
i.e. There was no open war, either by Baasha or others; only there were secret grudges and private hostilities between his and Baasha’s subjects, 1 Kings 15:16.
In this and the two following chapters we have the history of the reign of Asa, a good reign and a long one. In this chapter we have, I. His piety, 2Ch 13:1-5. II. His policy, 2Ch 13:6-8. III. His prosperity, and particularly a glorious victory he obtained over a great army of Ethiopians that came out against him, 2Ch 13:9-15.
