Amaziah begins to reign well; his victory over the Edomites, 2 Kings 14:1-7. He challenges Jehoash, king of Israel, 2 Kings 14:8. Jehoash's parable of the thistle and the cedar, 2 Kings 14:9, 2 Kings 14:10. The two armies meet at Beth-shemesh; and the men of Judah are defeated, 2 Kings 14:11, 2 Kings 14:12. Jehoash takes Jerusalem, breaks down four hundred cubits of the wall; takes the treasures of the king's house, and of the temple; and takes hostages, and returns to Samaria, 2 Kings 14:13, 2 Kings 14:14. The death and burial of both these kings, 2 Kings 14:15-20. Azariah, the son of Amaziah, made king; he builds Elath, vv. 21, 22. Jeroboam the second is made king over Israel: his wicked reign and death, vv. 23-29.
INTRODUCTION TO 2 Kings 14
In this chapter we have the good reign of Amaziah king of Judah, his victories over the Edomites, and war with Jehoash king of Israel, by whom he was taken, who died quickly after, 2 Kings 14:1, but Amaziah lived fifteen years afterwards, and was slain by a conspiracy against him, and Azariah his son reigned in his stead, 2 Kings 14:17, and a short account is given of the reign of Jeroboam the second, king of Israel, 2 Kings 14:23.

AMAZIAH'S GOOD REIGN OVER JUDAH.
The history of Judah is resumed 2 Kings 14:1-22, followed by a brief account of the contemporary history of Israel under Jeroboam II 2 Kings 14:23-29. The earlier narrative runs parallel with 2 Chronicles 25.
In the second year of Joash - This second year should be understood as referring to the time when his father Jehoahaz associated him with himself in the kingdom: for he reigned two years with his father; so this second year of Joash is the first of his absolute and independent government. - See Calmet.
In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah. As Joash king of Israel began to reign in the thirty seventh of Joash king of Judah, 2 Kings 13:10, who reigned forty years, Amaziah must therefore begin his reign in the fourth of Joash king of Israel; this therefore must be understood of his second year after he reigned alone, for he reigned two or three years in his father's lifetime.
Amaziah’s good reign: his justice on the murderers of his father: his victory over Edom: warreth against Jehoash king of Israel; is overcome by him, and slain by his own people: Azariah succeedeth him, 2 Kings 14:1-22. Jehoash dieth; and Jeroboam his son is king over Israel; his acts and death: Zachariah his son succeedeth him, 2 Kings 14:23-29.
In the second year of Joash, i.e. after he began to reign alone; for he reigned two or three years with his father; of which See Poole "2 Kings 13:10".
This chapter continues the history of the succession in the kingdoms both of Judah and Israel. I. In the kingdom of Judah here is, 1. The entire history (as much as is recorded in this book) of Amaziah's reign (1.) His good character, 2Ki 14:1-4. (2.) The justice he executed on the murderers of his father, 2Ki 14:5,6. (3.) His victory over the Edomites, 2Ki 14:7. (4.) His war with Joash, and his defeat in that war, 2Ki 14:8-14. (5.) His fall, at last, by a conspiracy against him, 2Ki 14:17-20. 2. The beginning of the history of Azariah, 2Ki 14:21,22. II. In the kingdom of Israel, the conclusion of the reign of Joash (2Ki 14:15,16), and the entire history of Jeroboam his son, the second of that name, 2Ki 14:23-29. How many great men are made to stand in a little compass in God's book!
