Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

This chapter is another single alphabet of Lamentations for the destruction of Jerusalem, like those in the first two chapters. I. The prophet here laments the injuries and indignities done to those to whom respect used to be shown, La 4:1,2. II. He laments the direful effects of the famine to which they were reduced by the siege, La 4:3-10. III. He laments the taking and sacking of Jerusalem and its amazing desolations, La 4:11,12. IV. He acknowledges that the sins of their leaders were the cause of all these calamities, La 4:13-16. V. He gives up all as doomed to utter ruin, for their enemies were every way too hard for them, La 4:17-20. VI. He foretels the destruction of the Edomites who triumphed in Jerusalem's fall, La 4:21. VII. He foretels the return of the captivity of Zion at last, La 4:22.

Lamentations 4 Introduction

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

In this poem Lamentations 4 the distinctive idea is, that the miseries Lamentations 4:1-11 which have befallen Judah are the punishment of her sin Lamentations 4:12-20, and will therefore end - when chastisement has had its proper effect - in her restoration Lamentations 4:21-22.

Lamentations 4 Introduction

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

The present deplorable sate of the nation is now contrasted with its ancient prosperity, Lamentations 4:1-12; and the unhappy change ascribed, in a great degree, to the profligacy of the priests and prophets, Lamentations 4:13-16. The national calamities are tenderly lamented, Lamentations 4:17-20. The ruin of the Edomites also, who had insulted the Jews in their distress, is ironically predicted, Lamentations 4:21. See Psalm 137:7, and Obadiah 1:10-12. The chapter closes with a gracious promise of deliverance from the Babylonish captivity, Lamentations 4:22.

INTRODUCTION TO Lamentations 4

The prophet begins this chapter with a complaint of the ill usage of the dear children of God, and precious sons of Zion, Lamentations 4:1; relates the dreadful effects of the famine during the siege of Jerusalem, Lamentations 4:3; the taking and destruction of that city he imputes to the wrath of God; and represents it as incredible to the kings and inhabitants of the earth, Lamentations 4:11; the causes of which were the sins of the prophets, priests, and people, Lamentations 4:13; expresses the vain hopes they once had, but now were given up entirely, their king being taken, Lamentations 4:17; and the chapter is concluded with a prophecy of the destruction of the Edomites, and of the return of the Jews from captivity, Lamentations 4:21.

Lamentations 4 Introduction

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

Ch. Lamentations 4:1-22. The sufferings of the people are consequent on sin

This ch. differs from the earlier ones, (a) in dwelling more on the sufferings of various classes of people, (b) in bringing out more clearly that these sufferings were the consequences of the national sin. Lamentations 4:1-10 set forth the miseries attendant on the siege, 11, 12 seem to indicate those of the capture, 13–16 point out that the prophets and priests are guilty and unclean, as though lepers, polluted as they are with innocent blood, 17–20 describe vividly the anxiety and miseries of the siege, 21, 22 declare that Edom’s triumph will be but short-lived.

The vv., acrostic as in earlier poems, consist each of two instead of three members. For the date see intr. note to ch. 2. Both chs. are thought to be by the same author, two points being brought out forcibly in each, viz. the responsibility of the leaders for the national disaster, and the sufferings of the children.

Lamentations 4:1

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

The stones of the sanctuary - Or, the hallowed stones, literally stones of holiness, a metaphor for the people themselves. The actual stones of the temple would not be thus widely thrown about as to be seen everywhere, but the prophet has already affirmed this of the young children dying of hunger (compare Lamentations 2:19).

Adam Clarke's Commentary and Critical Notes on the Bible

Lamentations 4:1

Đã dịch Lối đi mở

How is the gold become dim - The prophet contrasts, in various affecting instances, the wretched circumstances of the Jewish nation, with the flourishing state of their affairs in former times. Here they are compared to gold, זהב zahab, native gold from the mine, which, contrary to its nature, is become dim, is tarnished; and even the fine, the sterling gold, כתם kethem, that which was stamped to make it current, is changed or adulterated, so as to be no longer passable. This might be applied to the temple, but particularly to the fallen priests and apostate prophets.

The stones of the sanctuary - אבני קדש abney kodesh, the holy stones; the Jewish godly men, who were even then the living stones of which God built his Church.
