The Joyful Sheaves of One Who Sowed in Tears

¹[A song of degrees.] When the Lord turned againe the captiuitie of Zion: wee were like them that dreame.

²Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing, then said they among the heathen: The Lord hath done great things for them.

³The Lord hath done great things for vs: whereof we are glad.

⁴Turne againe our captiuitie, O Lord: as the streames in the South.

⁵They that sow in teares: shall reape in ioy.

⁶He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtlesse come againe with reioycing: bringing his sheaues with him.

Unless the Lord Builds the House

¹[A song of degrees for Solomon.] Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vaine that build it: except the Lord keepe the citie, the watchman waketh but in vaine.

²It is vaine for you to rise vp early, to sit vp late, to eate the bread of sorrowes: for so hee giueth his beloued sleepe.

³Loe, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the wombe is his reward.

⁴As arrowes are in the hand of a mightie man: so are children of the youth.

⁵Happie is the man that hath his quiuer full of them, they shall not be ashamed: but they shall speake with the enemies in the gate.

The Blessing of a Home That Fears the Lord

¹[A song of degrees.] Blessed is euery one that feareth the Lord: that walketh in his wayes.

²For thou shalt eat the labour of thine handes: happie shalt thou bee, and it shall be well with thee.

³Thy wife shalbe as a fruitful Uine by the sides of thine house, thy children like Oliue plants: round about thy table.

⁴Beholde that thus shall the man be blessed; that feareth the Lord.

⁵The Lord shall blesse thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Ierusalem, all the dayes of thy life.

⁶Yea, thou shalt see thy childrens children: and peace vpon Israel.

The Warrior Who Treads Edom and Returns

¹Who is this that commeth from Edom, with died garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, trauelling in the greatnesse of his strength? I that speake in righteousnesse, mightie to saue.

²Wherefore art thou red in thine apparell, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

³I haue troden the winepresse alone, and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my furie, and their blood shall be sprinkled vpon my garments, and I will staine all my raiment.

⁴For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the yeere of my redeemed is come.

⁵And I looked, and there was none to helpe; and I wondered that there was none to vphold: therefore mine owne arme brought saluation vnto me, and my furie, it vpheld me.

⁶And I will tread downe the people in mine anger, & make them drunke in my furie, and I will bring downe their strength to the earth.

A Plea Remembering the LORD's Former Mercies

⁷I will mention the louing kindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on vs; and the great goodnes towards the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them, according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his louing kindnesses.

⁸For hee said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so hee was their sauiour.

⁹In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the Angel of his presence saued them: in his loue and in his pitie hee redeemed them, and he bare them, and caried them all the dayes of olde.

¹⁰But they rebelled, and vexed his holy spirit: therefore hee was turned to be their enemie, and he fought against them.

¹¹Then he remembred the dayes of old, Moses and his people, saying; Where is hee that brought them vp out of the Sea, with the shepheard of his flocke? where is hee that put his holy Spirit within him?

¹²That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arme, diuiding the water before them, to make himselfe an euerlasting name?

¹³That led them through the deepe as an horse in the wildernesse, that they should not stumble?

¹⁴As a beast goeth downe into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so diddest thou leade thy people, to make thy selfe a glorious Name.

¹⁵Looke downe from heauen, and behold from the habitation of thy holinesse, and of thy glory: where is thy zeale and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels, and of thy mercies towards me? are they restrained?

¹⁶Doubtlesse thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of vs, and Israel acknowledge vs not: thou, O Lord art our Father, our Redeemer, thy Name is from euerlasting.

¹⁷O Lord, why hast thou made vs to erre from thy wayes? and hardened our heart from thy feare? Returne for thy seruants sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

¹⁸The people of thy holinesse haue possessed it but a little while: our aduersaries haue troden downe thy Sanctuarie.

¹⁹Wee are thine, thou neuer barest rule ouer them, they were not called by thy Name.

¹And it came to passe, when Iesus had made an end of commaunding his twelue Disciples, hee departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

The Question from John the Baptist

²Now when Iohn had heard in the prison the workes of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

³And said vnto him, Art thou hee that should come? Or doe wee looke for another?

⁴Iesus answered and saide vnto them, Go and shew Iohn againe those things which we doe heare and see:

⁵The blind receiue their sight, and the lame walke, the lepers are cleansed, and the deafe heare, the dead are raised vp, and the poore haue the Gospel preached to them.

⁶And blessed is he, whoseouer shal not be offended in me.

⁷And as they departed, Iesus began to say vnto the multitudes concerning Iohn, what went ye out into the wildernesse to see? a reede shaken with the winde?

⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that weare soft cloathing, are in kings houses.

⁹But what went ye out for to see? A Prophet? yea, I say vnto you, and more then a Prophet.

¹⁰For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

¹¹Uerely I say vnto you, Among them that are borne of women, there hath not risen a greater then Iohn the Baptist: notwithstanding, hee that is least in the kingdome of heauen, is greater then he.

¹²And from the dayes of Iohn the Baptist, vntill now, the kingdome of heauen suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

¹³For all the Prophets, and the Law prophecied vntill Iohn.

¹⁴And if ye wil receiue it, this is Elias which was for to come.

¹⁵Hee that hath eares to heare, let him heare.

¹⁶But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like vnto children, sitting in the markets, and calling vnto their fellowes,

¹⁷And saying, we haue piped vnto you, and ye haue not danced: wee haue mourned vnto you, and ye haue not lamented.

¹⁸For Iohn came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, he hath a deuill.

¹⁹The sonne of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a wine bibber, a friend of publicanes and sinners: but wisedom is iustified of her children.

Woe to the Unrepentant Cities

²⁰Then began he to vpbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

²¹Woe vnto thee Chorazin, woe vnto thee Bethsaida: for if the mightie workes which were done in you, had bene done in Tyre and Sidon, they would haue repented long agoe in sackcloth and ashes.

²²But I say vnto you, It shall bee more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of iudgement, then for you.

²³And thou Capernaum, which art exalted vnto heauen, shalt be brought downe to hell: For if the mighty works which haue beene done in thee, had bin done in Sodome, it would haue remained vntil this day.

²⁴But I say vnto you, that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, in ye day of iudgment, then for thee.

Come to Me, All Who Labor

²⁵At that time Iesus answered, and said, I thanke thee, O Father, Lord of heauen and earth, because thou hast hid these things fro the wise & prudent, & hast reueiled them vnto babes.

²⁶Euen so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight.

²⁷All things are deliuered vnto me of my father: and no man knoweth the sonne but the father: neither knoweth any man the father, saue the sonne, and hee to whomsoeuer the sonne will reueile him.

²⁸Come vnto me all yee that labour, and are heauy laden, and I will giue you rest.

²⁹Take my yoke vpon you, and learne of me, for I am meeke and lowly in heart: and yee shall find rest vnto your soules.

³⁰For my yoke is easie, and my burden is light.
