서론 신앙 교육의 필요성 인간의 정신과 지성의 본성은 이러하다. 곧 부지런하고 수고로운 탐구를 통하여 신적 진리에 대한 지식에 속한 다른 많은 것들을 스스로 조사하고 발견해 왔으나, 자연적 빛의 인도를 받는 것만으로는 하나님 형상과 모양을 따라 창조되고 형성된 사람의 주된 목적, 곧 영원한 구원에 이르게 하는 대부분의 것들을 결코 알거나 파악할 수 없었다. 사도가 가르치듯이, 세상 창조 때부터 하나님의 보이지 않는 것들, 곧 그분의 영원하신 능력과 신성은 그 지으신 것들로 말미암아 분명히 보이고 이해되는 것이 사실이다. 그러나 세대와 세대 동안 감추어져 있던 신비는 사람의 이해 범위를 훨씬 초월한다. 그러므로 하나님께서 성도들에게 그것을 나타내시지 않았다면, 곧 믿음의 선물로 이방인들 가운데 이 신비의 영광의 풍성함, 곧 그리스도를 알게 하기를 원하지 않으셨다면, 사람은 어떤 노력으로도 그러한 지혜에 이를 수 없었을 것이다. 그러나 믿음은 들음에서 나므로, 영원한 구원에 이르기 위해서는 공인된 교사의 수고와 신실한 직무가 언제나 얼마나 필요한지 분명하다. 기록된 바와 같이, 전파하는 자가 없이 어떻게 들을 수 있겠는가? 또한 보냄을 받지 않았다면 어떻게 전파할 수 있겠는가? 참으로 하나님께서는 세상의 창조 때부터 결코 자기 백성에게 부족함이 없으셨고, 지극히 자비롭고 은혜로우신 분으로 계셨다. 그분은 여러 시대에 여러 방식으로 선지자들을 통하여 조상들에게 말씀하셨고, 때와 형편에 맞는 방식으로 그들에게 하늘의 행복에 이르는 확실하고 직접적인 길을 지시하셨다. 또한 하나님께서는 의의 교사를 주셔서 이방인들의 빛이 되게 하시고, 그분의 구원이 땅끝까지 이르게 하시겠다고 미리 말씀하셨다. 그리하여 이 마지막 날에는 자기 아들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨고, 뛰어난 영광으로부터 나는 하늘의 음성으로 모든 사람이 그분의 말을 듣고 순종하라고 명하셨다. 더 나아가 아들은 어떤 사람들을 사도로, 어떤 사람들을 선지자로, 또 다른 사람들을 사목자와 교사로 주셔서 생명의 말씀을 선포하게 하셨다. 이는 우리가 온갖 교리의 바람에 밀려 요동하는 어린아이처럼 되지 않고, 믿음의 견고한 기초를 붙들어 성령 안에서 하나님의 거처로 함께 세워지게 하려는 것이다. 누구든지 교회의 직무자들에게서 하나님의 말씀을 받을 때, 그것을 실상 그대로 그리스도의 말씀으로 받지 않고 사람의 말로 받을 위험이 있다. 그러므로 같은 구원자께서는 그들의 직무에 매우 큰 권위를 부여하셔서 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. 너희 말을 듣는 자는 내 말을 듣는 것이요, 너희를 업신여기는 자는 나를 업신여기는 것이다. 그분은 이 말씀을 당시 직접 말씀을 들은 이들에게만 하신 것이 아니라, 합법적 계승에 따라 말씀의 직무를 수행할 모든 이들에게도 하셨다. 또한 세상 끝날까지 항상 그들과 함께 계시겠다고 약속하셨다.

INTRODUCTORY The Necessity of Religious Instruction Such is the nature of the human mind and intellect that, although by means of diligent and laborious inquiry it has of itself investigated and discovered many other things pertaining to a knowledge of divine truths; yet guided by its natural lights it never could have known or perceived most of those things by which is attained eternal salvation, the principal end of man's creation and formation to the image and likeness of God. It is true that the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are, as the Apostle teaches, clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made: his eternal power also, and divinity. But the mystery which hath been hidden from ages and generations so far transcends the reach of man's understanding, that were it not made manifest by God to His Saints, to whom He willed to make known by the gift of faith the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ, man could by no effort attain to such wisdom. But, as faith cometh by hearing, it is clear how necessary at all times for the attainment of eternal salvation has been the labor and faithful ministry of an authorized teacher; for it is written, how shall they hear, without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they be sent? And, indeed, never, from the very creation of the world, has God, most merciful and benignant, been wanting to His own; but at sundry times and in divers manners spoke to the fathers by the prophets, and pointed out to them in a manner suited to the times and circumstances, a sure and direct path to the happiness of heaven. But, as He had foretold that He would give a teacher of justice to be the light of the Gentiles, that His salvation might reach even to the ends of the earth, in these last days he hath spoken to us by his Son, whom also by a voice from heaven, from the excellent glory, He has commanded all to hear and to obey. Furthermore, the Son gave some to be apostles, and some prophets, and others pastors and teachers, to announce the word of life; that we might not be carried about like children tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine, but holding fast to the firm foundation of the faith, we might be built together into an habitation of God in the Spirit. Lest any should receive the Word of God from the ministers of the Church, not as the word of Christ, which it really is, but as the word of man, the same Saviour has ordained that their ministry should be invested with so great authority that He says to them: He that heareth you, heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me. These words He spoke not only of those to whom His words were addressed, but likewise of all who, by legitimate succession, should discharge the ministry of the word, promising to be with them all days even to the consummation of the world.
